Nov 2012 Straight Key/Bug Sprint (#97) Final Results K3WWP Comments - It's all over now. No more checking. No more appeals. The scores are final and written in stone. We wound up with 122 logs. The W2, W4, W8, W0 divisions had enough entries (10+ logs) to earn a Second Place certificate. W4 had enough (20+ logs) for a Third Place certificate. Til next time 73 K2DEP - I really enjoyed this NA Sprint. Condx were pretty good especially on 80M which I was not able to use before I put up the G5RV. And I learned a little more abt my ICOM 703. Hope to get better at this. I have been a ham 7 1/2 months now and really enjoy CW. Hope to see you on the bands. Steve KB0KFX - Had fun coming back to this sprint from a spring/summer/fall hiatus. I'm finally putting some good air time on the KX3 and it's getting better. I'm also glad I got on the air before imminent snow and cold because I found my vertical needs tweaking especially on 80M. 80M noise (or lack thereof) sounded like the dead quiet of winter here. K4KRW - Conditions here were absolutely horrible. I heard maybe 7 stations in all. I managed two contacts. I still had fun trying to pull everyone out of the noise. Thanks! K3WWP - Now that was a fun relaxing two hours. QRN was bad, but my new KX3 worked very well in helping to pull you out of the mud. There were a couple stations I just couldn't get. One ended in a U, I think and the other one had an X in the call. Sorry about that. I found the KX3 much more relaxing to operate than any other rig I've used in our sprint. Looking forward to doing the CQWW DX contest with it now. Nice to work some folks I don't believe I've worked in our sprints before, as well as the old familiar folks. It's wonderful how some of you seem to never miss a sprint. Now after a computer club meeting and our sprint, I'm going to take it easy for an hour or so before bedtime, and probably watch some Formula 1 Grand Prix racing on the Internet. On 40 at first and not so good. Went to 80 and had quite a few QSO's in a little over an hour. Fun but rushed. Next month will be on Tuesday evening so it will hopefully be more relaxing. Rig was my K2-10 @ 5 watts and a Nye Master key. 72 de WV K2UFT - On 40 about 0240 could hear W7 station working mid-west, conditions otherwise spotty. Should have gone t0 80 earier in evening, nothing heard on 20 meters. KE3HL - Nice to be back after a year's absence! VA3KUG - Enjoyed another Sprint. I operated with TS-480 at 5 watts and made most contacts with ZS6BKW inverted V dipole at 30' . I had planned to stick to 40m for the whole sprint but I found conditions on 40 fairly poor. Signals on 80m were stronger and seemed to be less affected with QSB. Regardless, I am having a blast working these short duration contests! KB4QQJ - That was a good sprint. Odd conditions. I'd been trying ot check into a net and no one could hear me so I figured the sprint would be slow also. Twenty meters was dead as a hammer....Turns out only east west couldn't here me. North South was hoppin! Forty was still going strong when I switched to 80 and it was solid contacts till the end and had a few waiting. My apologies to the W?9?M and ?6MGO stations. I tried to pull out out of the mini pileup but just too much QRM. Had fun. Rig= KX3 # 085, Ant= PAR EndFedz at 33 feet, Key= 1920's Marconi AS300A straight key. 72 for now, Randy_KB4QQJ KB0ETU - First contact I gave the wrong number (KB4QQP). Gave him 3383 instead of 3833. 20 meter band was completely dead for me. 40 meters was noisey, and surprise surprise, made a contact on 80 meters which was really noisey until 0321, then it went quiet. Fun sprint. Ready for the next one already. K-2 @ 5 watts with dipole up 40 feet. Works for me! Happy Thanksgiving everyone. 72, Phil - KB0ETU KB9ILT - Forty meters was strong the first hour, terrible the second. Managed a few QSOs on 80 meters, but don't have a decent antenna for that band. The bands must have been long as I had no QSOs with neighboring states. Thanks to all. WA0KAQ - This was an experimental contest for me - the first with the group in a l-o-n-g time. I downloaded GenLog and got it working, but only spent about 45 minutes on the air. The new shack is aboout half set up. I cut a wire for 40 and threw it into a tree. Have 16 radials of various lengths spread out till I can get set up better. Thanks all for hearing me from N.C. Always fun working the Sprints. 72 DE WG8Y Mark K6CSL - Very sparse population on 20m, TNX to VE5BCS and KH6G for the QSO's. It was really nice to work Doc, K0EVZ in NM on 40. I hear Doc regularly in the QRP Fox Hunts. Then it is very unusual for me to work anything QRP on 80 and it was really nice to work NU7T up in Sparks, NV. 73's to all and to all a good night from the beautiful San Joaquin Valley. Bert, K6CSL K5GQ - WOW this is a loud signal. 100W OK! N4FZ - Band conditions were down, and fewer signals heard this Sprint.I had to really work to hear the weak signals on 40m. I was using my newly built Hendricks KD1JV Tribander QRP rig, with a Lionel J-38 WWII key. Had fun just the same! 73s All, Gene K4ORD - Started on 40M only made 1 qso VE3FUJ with a good signal, then I said hey where is everybody,quick check of 20M was nil,so ok will try noisy 80M and low and behold it was quieter than my line noise on 10M ( which I hope the power co. fixes soon, I found an ARC on a ground wire)and plenty of NAQCC ops on 80, had a great run made 57 qso's on 80M and just the one on 40M. My FIREFOX PLUG IN says the solar flux is 142 and A index 33, K index 1, so that must be what it takes to make 80M so good! Thanks to all for the qso's 73/72 Riley WB9G - My first Sprint. I feel like giving this site a lot of static for not displaying all of my soapbox comments last month, namely, the campaign propaganda I included urging people to write in my call sign for President of the United States on their ballots. I attribute my not being elected President directly to that exclusion. I have been almost completely disconsolate ever since losing the election. It is fortunate that the monthly NAQCC sprint constitutes one of my few consolations! KC2VBU - What fun and great conditions here on 40m & 80m. Never even checked out 20m. Really enjoyed the great ops helping me feel good moving up to the world of 4 watts from QRPp....gud to work you Don(W2JEK)glad top see the mess from Sandy didn't keep you (or me)off the air! WX4RM - Another fun sprint. 20 was dead as a doornail, so started off on noisy 40. Was able to hold a frequency for the first half hour, which produced half of my qso's. This seems to be the key to getting a good score. Did hunt and pounce the remaining hour and a half on 40 and 80. Had a blast, thanks for all those hams with good ears who pulled my signal out. N3PDT - Noisy, noisy and noisy, but always fun. Trying out a new antenna, and pleased with results so far. It's 148' inverted L, vertical leg only 45', and over a field of 32-29'and 4-61' radials. Finally have a decent 80m antenna! Had some problems remembering to switch the bands in GenLog when I moved, so I apologize for any busted calls due to my negligence. KC2JKU - Lot's of fun for the short time I was on. Someday I may be able to run a full sprite with out interruptions. HAHA Keep doing a great job with these sprints. NW2K - Only 3 minutes, but I wanted to get a log in. KQ1P - Conditions were like Goldilocks and the three bears- 20 was too quiet, 40 was too noisy, and 80 was just right. Have a pleasant Thanksgiving everyone. John N3SW - First NAQCC Sprint for me. It was fun. K4BAI - FT1000MP, dipole, inverted vee. No credit is counted for the first three QSOs as I was running over 5W at that time by mistake. Thanks for K0EUN for working me a second time to count for me for the sprint. 20M was dead at the start. 40 and 80M were both good, quiet, with good activity from all over. 40M started out short and rapidly went long. I lost several QSOs in the middle of the exchange when the signals faded out. Very sorry about that. 80M was good out to TX, MN, and NJ as well as for local GA and AL stations. Fewer multipliers since 20M activity was almost non existent. Still one of my best Sprints in terms of total contacts. 72 and 73 to all who had the patience to pull out my signal. KB1UOH - 40M was pretty rough here but enjoyed the short time I had. KS and GA contacts made it worth while. VE3FUJ - Condx's were very poor at this QTH noise-level high and signal very week so I packed it in after abt 1/2 hr. Also I wasn't really feeling up to it this time, for some reason. Brion 3011 KB3ZHX - Got a late start for my first sprint. Operated portable from mountain near home. It took a bit longer than expected to get my antenna up, but all went well. Great fun and managed to work 29 qso's! Thanks! WD4E - Good condx on 40 with low qrn and some very nice long skip. I forgot to write the end time for each contact. Hope you accept my effort without being accurate time wise. Have been unable to participate for several months--unavoidable conflicts. People were spread out nicely across the band making it much easier to separate calls. Thanks guys! QRO signals not a problem this time. With my equipment noise is always a problem. Maybe my ears need filters and amplifiers. 73! K6MGO - I honestly don't get it, California(W6) used to have about the most hams in the country, we have 370 members in the NAQCC and yet we consistently have the least or next to the least logs turned in. What happened to all of the CA (W6)hams? I had S9 noise on 20m and didn't hear a single signal, QRP or QRO, Never have heard a single signal on 80m here in CA, and had a S8 noise level on 40m, but at least there were some signals. Always fun, the other CA members don't know what they are missing. Sorry about the soap box, but it makes me sad that so many don't participate. VE3GNU - Interesting! Almost equal success on 40 and 80---there were considerable 'strange' noises at or near the center of our operational-window---as well! Happy with my results---setup here: Argonaut V at 5 W and a DXCC multiband dipole with the apex at 40 ft. Had to narrow the DSP filter down quite a bit, though. Thanks to all who showed such patience and courtesy. AA7VW - 20 meters good out to the MS river. Nothing heard from the east coast. Only 30 minutes operating but still had fun. "72" Scotty KU4A - A little slow this month, as 40m was packed with signals. Will definitely try 80m some next month. K2YGM - Very high noise level here due to branches hanging on nearby power lines resulting from HURRICANE SANDY and the Noreaster. Conditions were not very good on 40 at this location and I decided to try 80 with just the center of the coax and the existing 40 meter Inv Vee. Not very efficient but it worked a bit. Lots of strong signals on 80 from the southern states. Managed Canada as well. Thanks for another fun sprint. 72 Bob K2YGM W1OH - Two sprints in a row! Had fun doing a little S&P on 40m and 80m. I logged K4KRW at 0229 but did not hear his QSL on the exchange. I hope he got the info. For this Sprint, I used a J-47 straight key which I recently found at local antique shop. This is my 3rd consective month to participate NAQCC Sprint! W2JEK - Conditions were poor with none heard on 20 and only 3 qso on 40 which had a qsb problem. 80m was the best but not as good as i've heard it in the past. Glad to work k3wwp and kc2vbu with their new rigs. Used ft-840 at 5 watts and wire antennas. Had a great time. Thanks to all. Dick K1IEE N9RLO - I was very tired, made only one QSO on 80, then pulled the switch and went to bed. KB3ZHX had an excellent signal on 80 and I made contact with him on the first call. Rig was an ICOM 718 at 5 watts, my favorite Junker straight key and a center fed Zepp, fed with ladder line, up 45 ft. Happy Thanksgiving to all and 73, John N9RLO W2SH - In NJ after 15 days of no electricity, 13 without heat until the purchase of a small generator, I was in no shape for a sprint. But QRP ham radio can run on battery power, something I did in small doses. With a shack temperature in the low 40s Fahrenheit and fingers stiff after hours of running a chainsaw, my QRV sessions and resulting QSOs were necessarily brief. Commercial power was restored two days before the sprint, but having been lodged for a fortnight in a depressing and stressful time capsule without internet or telephone connections, I had no idea that a NAQCC sprint was due. Hearing a "CQ NA" at 0208Z, the reality slowly dawned on me. Large falling trees, two of which landed on my roof, had taken down all but one antenna. 80 seemed lively and it was in vastly better shape than 40. My final peek at 40 revealed WA6OEF. I figured he was a displaced west coaster and nearly fell out of my chair when he came back to me with "579 CA"! Despite the many troubles here, this sprint brought great joy, much coming from QSOs with five members holding >6K NAQCC numbers. VE3RCN - I only had 40 minutes for radio time. Wall to wall QRP signals here. I wish I could have spent the whole two hours at the radio. Lots of activity. Conditions were quite good. KD0V/0 - The evening of November 14 was not the evening to operation with a Buddistick sitting on the floor of a hotel room in Fargo, ND. High noise level and poor propagation. It really gives me sympathy for those of you who have to use and indoor antenna. If anyone tried to answer my call, THANK YOU. I didn't hear you. Sometimes an SWR of 1.2 to 1 is just not good enough for a short vertical. 72, Merlin - KD0V NI8N - Great Fun. K4NVJ - Good condx! VE3XT - First go at submitting a log, hope it is ok, Bill VE3XT NQ2W - Ten-Tec Jupiter at 5W to an inverted vee at 40' (40) and a ground mounted, homebrewed, near bottom-loaded vertical with too few radials (80). Started late so I could finish watching Survivor! 20 was very quiet at 0200 UTC - heard one station but was not heard by that station. 40 was better but sigs were up and down. Heard K4BAI and called him...he was gone. Glad I was able to work him later. Lots of signals were like that so only 10 Q's. 80 was okay but my antenna and my city lot really limits what can be done...made 3 Q's and am glad I can make any. Hoping for better conditions next month and for the upcoming CQ WWDX test and ARRL 10 Meter test...lots of fun.
