Aug 2012 Straight Key/Bug Sprint (#94)

NW2K Comments - Great conditions all around! Signals were S9+10, well above the QRN. Couple of items: Our sprints are a great way to earn the Friendship Club Award and GenLog does all the heavy lifting for you (see the tutorial at the NAQCC website). Also, please note that you can work the same station once on each band for QSO credit so please check 80, 40 and 20 if you can.

K3WWP Comments - That's it. The results are final. The week set aside for appeals is over and all scores are locked in stone with no further chance for any change. Thanks for keeping our sprints in top notch shape with 126 logs this month. We are waiting till we hit 150 logs per sprint as a norm, then we have some exciting new features in mind. No changes to the very successful basic formula we have now, but.... Well, I'm not going to say more as we may never hit 150 logs and then you'll be disappointed. So it's up to you now. End of tease.

KC9MTP - I rushed in the door after my bike ride to catch Paul on the air calling CQ NA so I cranked the 950 down to 5W and waited my turn through his small pile up. Nice signal coming in at 10 over. He came back after my first call and then it was a rush to the shower and back out the door. It was only one contact, but I don't care, just want to keep showing support for the NAQCC. Bill KC9MTP

W3HZZ - My first sprint (NW2K: Thanks for joining in Phil!). Great fun. Good operators. Only had 45 minutes. Next month, I will spend more time. Rig is K3 and Lopsided horizontal loop. Phil, W3HZZ

KJ4LEN - I was able to work the first hour. Pretty good sigs on 20 and 40. Longest contact was 1400 mi with NP3CW. I ran 5W with my TS130V. Thanks for another fine QRP sprint. Ray

WA9NPS - Great signals in here tonight! Conditions or my new antenna(?), which is a 120 foot 450 ohm fed dipole at 30 feet.

K2HT - QRN heavy due to storms in southern MO. Thanks for the QRP QSO's. See you next sprint 72/73

W4ONC - I got in late because I had forgotten about the sprint. 40 was full of members. After my first two contacts, one of which was from down the road, N4FI, I was unable to make any other contacts. By then I thought my antenna had come down. The band was still full of members but for some reason I was unable to make it out of the backyard. Maybe I'll have better luck the next time.

AB1II - My first NAQCC Sprint (NW2K: Jay, Welcome!). Thank you. This club is great. 73 from Jay AB1II

W1SVU - Last month I used an old ground mounted Vertical with no radials. This month I'm using a ZS6BKW inverted... 5 watts with my old (1960's) Navy key from when I flew as a radio operator back in '63. Lots and Lots of fun! Tony, W1SVU (ex K5MYU, W6FBC and W5SVU)

WM4AA - Conditions seemed pretty good tonight. This was my first sprint with a new vanity callsign. 73/72, Matt WM4AA

K4FB - My first sprint entry (NW2K: Welcome!). I was on 20 only. I will have a 40 antenna up before the next sprint. Nice to have EA5GZV answer my CQ. Rig was KX3 #242 into a Par End Fedz up 20' in the backyard.

AA7CU - Worked the sprint from Arizona. Lost the last 30 minutes of the sprint due to a thunderstorm.

W7WHY - This was fun. First time with the new number (NW2K: Tom, welcome and thanks for the QSO!). Never heard anything on 40. Thanks for the Q's and 73. Tom W7WHY

AC8AP - I was mobile on my way home and worked many stations. I could not remember my member number so I sent 5W. I had fun and tried to give out some points while I was driving in divided lanes, no traffic areas. I worked some 20 and 40 meters. 73 Alan AC8AP

K5TRI - Wow what a difference to last month. I figured now that I had 100 CW QSOs under my belt (total) it was time to run instead of S&P. Boy what a difference. Before I would score 5 or so QSOs, this time I made 15. I was mostly on 20 and the band worked quite well. Highlight certainly was the DX contact with Carlos (CO8CML) on 20. 40 was kinda noisy towards the end but I am satisfied either way.

W9UX - Good conditions tonight and a lot of activity. A fun evening. 72, Terry

AE5KA - My best yet, though 40 was very noisy here. Thanks everyone!

KC2EGL - Enjoyed the company on the air as usual tonight. Started out on 20 without any luck. Spent the rest of the evening on 40. I wish some people would listen while calling CQ. There were a few out there who did not even wait 2 seconds before calling CQ again. And those who try to jump in on a QSO, please wait until the current QSO is finished. Some of us are starting to act a little on the rude side. Remember this is not a big gun event. See you next month on the radio. 73 Mike Rig-TS2000 (KX-3 please hurry up and get here) Key-US Navy Flame Proof

K9OSC - Conditions on 20 were excellent tonight. Some noise and QRN on 40 but not enough to do much damage. Nice to see so many friends on again tonight.

K2GLS - 20 stayed open tonight so got some extra multipliers and a lot of activity on 40 and static crashes were not bad. Thanks to all who pulled my signal out of the QRN. 73, 72

K9EYT - 20 and 40 not too bad this time from Chicago. Nice to get back on the air. Thanks all, great fun!! Ray K9EYT

KB4QQJ - That was quick!! I got home in time to catch the last 12 minutes of the sprint....Made 8 contacts and just couldn't quite pull out that last one. To the N8? DW? I apologize. Someone was tuning right on top of you and time ran out. Rig--> Elecraft KX3. Ant--> 5 band no tune doublet. BCNU, Randy_KB4QQJ

NF8M - Was my son KD8DWF's 21st birthday but wanted to make a couple Qs and submit a log. Hope to make a few more next month. CUL and 72

N3PDT - Always happy when the NAQCC sprint happens on a night I'm not working! 20 was great here. Worked a lot of new-to-me calls. Thanks to all.

W3HI - Breaking in my new FT-857D. I'm finding that even with a 300HZ filter, the receiver overloads badly with strong close stations. I missed at least 3 contacts because of it. SRI guys. Maybe there's a cure for the receiver that I'm not savvy to and would appreciate any info. I started out on 20 and expected more, but it seemed really flat to me, so I headed down to 40 where I think the whole membership was working! A quick jaunt down to 80 and I didn't hear any NAs, so back to 40. Beyond that, I enjoyed the sprint as usual and like working this gang of great operators and look forward to the next time. 72 from West Virginia!

W5ODS - Lots of QRN tonight along with weak signals in OK.

WA2JSG - My 2nd sprint using GenLog. Sure makes things easier (NW2K: Curt, don't spread the word, GenLog is a secret weapon for higher scores too!). Icom IC-703, 5w to an elevated vertical off a 12v battery. Bencher RJ-1 Straight Key. These sprints ROCK!

K3RLL - Trying out a new FLEX-1500 with various keying methods tonight on a shake-down cruise of sorts. Many thanks for your patience with my keying problems. Computer here must be too slow for the Flex. Not a lot heard on 20 but 40 sounded really good tonight with many very strong signals. 72/73, ... Don

N4FZ - First Sprint using my new to me HW-8! 20 was very good tonite, 40 ok. Using the DC receiver was interesting, compared to the K2, hihi. Several stations were loud, but QRM prevailed a few times. Had fun, that's what it's all about! 73 Gene N4FZ

W8MRL - Thank you for working with the newbie. My copy is so slow! KX1NH stayed with me when he was being covered by a strong station. K8AP stayed patiently as I struggled with his call. These are my first two NAQCC contacts (NW2K: Welcome! You will not find a better bunch of OPs.).

K3WWP - As I thought to myself at the very end, "Well it's better than last month." And it was. 20 was very good to me tonight. I think 13 QSOs are the most I've ever made on 20 in our sprints. But as I often say, our sprints are not about making big scores or winning, but having fun. I did really enjoy the sprint tonight. There were some dry spells, but then when the QSOs come 5 or 6 in a row, that makes up for the dry spells. It was nice to work Jerry WB0T who is a regular visitor to my web site at http://k3wwp.com/ and we often exchange emails, but that was only our second QSO. I think working W7WHY on 20 makes the first time I've worked OR in one of our sprints. Apologies to the one station on 20 I just couldn't dig out despite his persistence. I think the first letter of his suffix was N, but I'm not even sure of that. His signal never came above my noise level even though it was only S2 or S3. That's probably why I did so well on 20. OK, that's being long winded enough. I'll leave room for more of you to get on the soapbox now.

K4KRW - Bands were great tonight. Got one third of my QSOs on 20. Heard Oregon and CA from here in NC but could not make it back. Nice to get San Juan. Thanks Julio. K2UFT - sorry about the dupe. Logging error on my part. Thanks everyone.

WB4MNK - Bands were in good shape tonight. Had a lot of fun and worked some new ones tonight. Thanks to everybody and mainly the volunteers that do fantastic job making these sprints such a geat success.

K4EQ - This was my first sprint and I had a blast (NW2K: Welcome aboard. Your rig sounded great here!). It gave my newly built NorCal 40A a great workout.

WD4OHD - Another fun sprint. Thanks to all.

AB9CA - Lots of local QRM tonight. I know some called and I could not hear you. Sorry. In an RV park and the neighbor has some nasty noise maker. Would come and go and occupied from about 14056 to 14068 at different times. It did not stay on the same frequency. Hard to avoid it. Rig was K1 at 3w. Power source was 8 pack of AA batteries. Antenna was vertical attached to my small travel trailer. Operated only on 20 since my antenna is single band. Band conditions seemed to be fairly good. Had it not been for the QRM likely would have done quite a bit better. Thanks to all who stopped by and especially those that persisted and gave me fills through the QRM. 73 de Dave AB9CA

K4ORD - Started on 20, made 1 QSO then went to 40. Things were slow at first, then I got a phone call from a ham friend which took out about 24 minutes, but after the call things really picked up and I had a great run to wind up with 48 QSO's on 40. Sure be nice to have a sprint without QRN on 40! Thanks to all, 73/72 Riley

W2JEK - Got on late. was at a club meeting and got George N2CG to come on after the meeting and worked him twice. 20 and 40 were great but not much activity on 80. All in all had a good time. 72 and 73 Don Younger W2JEK #1135

K2UFT - Two members sent 5W so they were counted as non-members. Had fun as usual, FT1000 at 5W, William Nye straight key (part of an estate I'm selling) wore me out after 2 hours!

KB8FE - Conditions were very good in northern Ohio tonight. Good on 20 and outstanding on 40. I handed out a LOT of accurate 589 and 599 reports. I actually had to add lines to my log form in order to log all the contacts. Very little static, cool air, damp ground. Really a wonderful sprint! I never walked away from the rig the entire two hours. I could hear many distant stations but the strong stations kept me busy. Also, thanks to those that spread out on the band rather than crowd on top of each other. Great night!

WA4ZOF - My first sprint with the KD1JV Tri-Bander. Will connect the straight key to it next sprint for the bonus. Great time as usual... 72 Tom WA4ZOF

W7GAH - Only worked 20 tonight. 40 was quite noisy. Had a bunch of things going on this evening but tried to get the headphones on for the beginning and end of the sprint. Fun as always. 73 Jerry W7GAH

NY4G - Had one QSO with a brand new KX3 but just did not feel comfortable with it as the K2 is so much more intuitive. Stayed on 40 the whole time. Had fun - see you guys again next time - NY4G

K6CSL - Wow! Fun Sprint this evening. Conditions not awefully good, but still fun. Bert, K6CSL

WD5EAE - These sprints are something I really look forward to now. They are short enough to enjoy, long enough to work on my straight key endurance, and allow me to work on copying weaker signals. Thank you to everyone involved.

N8DWN - Had a great time this round. More contacts and member NP3CW in Puerto Rico! 20 was pretty solid for a while. Went to 40 at just after 02:00, but antenna just couldn't do it. I still had a great time...thanks for another good round guys! 73 and see you on the air. Carl

AA4GA - Got a late start - I brought my supper into the shack so I could eat and operate at the same time - often times the pause in my sending was me taking a bite of jambalaya! Conditions seemed pretty good - 80 was a bit noisy, as would be expected in August, but 40 wasn't too bad at all here. There was some QSB, and for *several* stations, I'd written down a signal report of, say, 559 and sent it, but when they came back, they were really legitimate 589! Using FT817ND at 5 watts out with the doublet. Fun time!

AE7CG - Thanks to Gregg WB8LZG and Robert W5YDM for this month's QSOs on 20. I took 30 minutes off for dinner, and then resumed listening to the sprint until the ending time. The sprints are always fun, and I consider myself lucky to make any contacts at all. Rig here is an MFJ Cub running 2 watts to a 20 dipole up 10 feet from the ground. I look forward to next month's NAQCC sprint! 72, Loren, AE7CG, Arizona

N8LA - Used my new Yaesu FT-817ND with SpeedX skirted hand key for first time in this sprint. 20 was open and 40 was very crowded. Gotta get a CW filter. Pushin' buttons and lookin' at the screen as well as turning knobs: 21st Century multitasking! Hope I do better at it than I did at trying to chew gum and walk at the same time in the 20th Century! At least the new setup was able to get thru to "Father" John (K3WWP) and "Brother" Larry (W9CC) for my final two contacts.

W5IQS - Good Sprint. Stayed on 20 all the way. Not sure I heard a QSL from AE7CG at 0045. Hope he did log me. Was happy to hear Carlos, CO8CML. Good signal from Cuba Carlos, Thanks. My Apologies to VE7CBN I could not copy your exchange due to QRM at 0225. Sorry. Best to all, See you next Sprint. Evan. W5IQS

WX4RM - Lots of good signals out there tonite. Spent 1 1/2 hrs on 20, lots of activity, but no west coast heard. Gave 40m a half hour at end, filled in the midwest station's multipliers I needed. Glad to work Canada and Puerto Rico. Love these sprints, 2 hours is just enough fun for a nite.

K6ACJ - Slow start on 7030 and 7044 but fun. Elecraft KX-1 with 10 AA batteries for power.

K2YGM - My first contest as a member (NW2K: Welcome aboard Bob!).. Lots of really good cw ops out there..40 was very noisy here so I started on 20.. Lots of activity there for the first hour, then signals started to fade..Some QRM present on 40 from non participants rag chewing near suggested frequencies..See you all again next month... 72 Bob K2YGM

N9RLO - I Hope everyone had a good time, I know I did. 20 and 40 seemed to be in pretty good shape here in Indiana. Both were busy with us. Wall to Wall brass pounding. I'll see you all in a month. 73, John Hill N9RLO

VE7YU - 20 sounded like 80 - s9 static crashes. Copy was very difficult. 40 was quiet but no activity heard.

AE8M - Activity and conditions were better than usual on 20 and I spent the first hour there. One of my contest goals is to work AE7CG in AZ with his 2W and low dipole, but no luck tonight. I heard a 7 calling in the noise but could not get anymore of his call; maybe it was Loren. 40 was also very good and I had to go down to 7035 to find a hole to call CQ. Rig was K3, 31 Q's on 40, 23 Q's on 20. 73, John, AE8M

KD0V - The band conditions were good in southern Minnesota. It was a good time. Thanks everyone. 72 KD0V

WB8ENE - I operated my usual one hour. I couldn't believe all of the S9 signals, especially on 40. One of the nice things about participating in a QRP sprint is that you don't have to compete with 100 Watt stations. The other nice thing is that others are listening for weak signals. I used an Elecraft K3 and a Begali Blade straight key. 72, Art

KE5YUM - I had a great time as always though a thunderstorm south of me didn't help with the band conditions on 40. Tried 80 with my HW-8 and dipole, but I didn't hear anyone. Thanks to all who worked me. 73, Terry

WB8LZG - Hello again fellow QRPers. Good sprint last evening. Conditions on 20 were good but a bit diferent. No short skip, and no east coast guys heard, yet several west coast stations made it into the log. AE7CG, Loren, gets the patience and persistence award. After several attempts to get his call right near the "fist" freq with no joy, I had given up. But he followed me up about 10 kcs, and had a good QSO. TNX OM! 40 was wall to wall QRP signals, but very few east coasters heard there either. I had a short QSO with Scott, VA3IED, who was /p camping in Algonquin Park running "holiday style" QRP. I worked some stations in the south, but I didnt seem to have the usual "BEELINE" into TX and FL/GA. Several VE's made it in the log though, and lots of activity from Ontario. Very weak signals on 80. No luck there. See you all next month! 73 Gregg WB8LZG

K1IEE - Band conditions good on 40. Lots of stations and little QRN. After the first hour decided to check 20 and stayed. Signals were weak but all workable. Enjoyed the Sprint. Thanks to all, 73 Dick

K4BAI - FT1000MP, 5W, WM-2 QRP Wattmeter, TH6DXX, dipole. Great participation and great conditions tonight. Had to take about five minutes out for two traffic net skeds. Great to work DX stations G3RSP, EA5GVZ, and NP3CW. 20 was so good, I nearly didn't go to 40, but needed the 4th district multipliers. 40 was also very good and packed with sprinters. 43 QSOs on 20 and 16 QSOs on 40. Thanks for all QSOs. Hope to meet many of you at the Huntsville AL hamfest and ARRL Southeastern Division Convention this weekend. 73/72, John, K4BAI.

KD2MX - Just made it for the last 10 minutes or so. Sounded like it was a good night and I saw lots of signals on my waterfall.

W8DW - Good band conditions here this month. Was doing quite well till a computer problem and had to restart my log program and lost my spot. Oh well, things happen. At least a better time than last month. See you all next month, 72

N9SF - Another fun sprint! Got a late start this time. Felt a little QLF. Tried 20 at the start, but couldn't stand the local QRN. QSY'd to 40 and never made it to 80. My new KX3 worked fine when I didn't inadvertently bump the dials. My apologies to the 3 that I lost mid QSO. CU next time. 72/73 Bob

KA6AIL - Thanks to all who put up with my bad straight key. Where does the time go. See you next month, 72.

W5YDM - FT-950 and fan dipole. Lots of 20 signals as usual. That's a good summer band and if all the stations I hear would answer me, I would never need to leave it, but after the first hour, I always hit a long streak where I wonder if I will ever make another contact. The signals are still there, but they don't seem to want to answer me. Of course it helps not to press the VFO B TX button when you intended to press the RIT CLEAR button. That happended in the second hour and I don't have any idea how long it went on before I discovered it. I was really transmitting on 14.018 instead of 14.062. You guys with CAT control probably don't have that problem. There's a cure for it and I will be sure to use it in the next sprint whenever I change frequencies - the A>B button.

WD4E - Got a late start, but it was still a fun sprint. Nice to see 20 open for a while. I heard WA, NV, and CA but could not get back to them.

KB1UOH - Conditions were good in CT. 40 was busy and a lot of fun.

NP3CW - Long time missing Sprints due to other activities with family. I tried to go with wire antenna and started in 80m band, heard few stations but very weak signals, then moved to 40 and heard few stations calling CQ NA but none heard my 5W signal. I changed to 20, heard heavy activity there but doing S&P nobody answered me. After that, made the decision for a gain antenna. First QSO was at 0041 UTC. It was nice to work K4BAI in GA again. Also working N2ESE Gary in NJ with a nice number 5555. I think this is one of my highest scores with 30 QSOs and 29 members. All the contacts were on 20. Thanks to all stations. Sorry for the ones I could not copy. Good luck to all. Julio NP3CW

W4RQ - I enjoy the sprints and I don't want to be derogative, but, since these are not contests I would like to see QSOs consist of more than RST, state abbreviation, and number. Several people don't even send CQ, but rather NA +Callsign! Some do treat it as a full blown contest, and that's fine for them. I'm just saying there should be more of an exchange, a name would be good. Perhaps bonus for exchanging ages? Something along this line would only enhance the popularity of the sprints, that's my point of view. Shutting my mouth now.

KU4A - With this Sprint I have completed 60 consecutive months of at least one Participation Point (NW2K: WOW! Keep it going!!). That's nothing like John's incredible "QSO a day" streak going back years. But it's been fun and challenging to keep this going.

KA2KGP - I had to wait for a thunderstorm to pass the first 1/2 hour, then shut down again mid-sprint for another bout of lightning. QRN was horrid, but 20 was open nice for a while. Summer storms are a real joy to work around! 73 to all.

K4NVJ - John, I promise to learn GenLog, hopefully before next month. K4NVJ

VE7KBN - Used my HB1B. Many stations heard but QSB made it a challenge. Had fun. Will be back. Thanks to the crew who put these together!!

W1OH - Been a while since I got on the air for a sprint. Always fun to hand out a few contacts with #39, especially now with member numbers up into the 6000 range - wow! Way to go, NAQCC! Conditions on 20 and 40 sounded quite good (and folks are spreading out pretty well too). Used my K2 @ 5W to the 40M doublet as usual. Thanks, NAQCC!

KA5TJS - It was hot in the garage (96F) but I did well on 20. I am still new at contesting so I am not real fast but had a good time. It will be better when we get some cooler weather down here and I can stay a little longer. 73 and CUL, Allen KA5TJS

W3NP - Started out on 20. Signals seemed to be down and kept hearing the same stations. Went to 40 and found there to be a lot of activity with mostly very good signals. Skip seemed shorter than last month. I couldn't stay until the party was over, so I had less operating time than usual. My apologies to the station or stations calling when I had to QRT. Rig: Ten Tec Eagle and key was my Junker straight key. K8DIO came up with a member number (5933) but he kept sending 5W, so I logged him as a non-member (NW2K: This happens from time to time. These type of QSOs are counted as "member QSOs"). I heard the same exchange when he worked W5ODS. I sent him his number. 73 from West Virginia

N2ESE - Good signals on 20 and 40. Never had time to check 80. Two hours sure went fast! Thanks to all. 73 Gary #5555

CO8CML - Another nice sprint. Nice to work Nando, EA5GVZ. Thanks to all. See you next month.

N2COD - A nasty thunderstorm visited north-central PA during the sprint and I only had time for a CW contact with my brother Tom, KA2KGP from the mobile. So much QRN here the bands were unuseable. 73

N8XMS - Relatively high QRN but a lot of fun and my personal all-time best score.

N8IUP - Great time.

VE3FUJ - Had a swell time again, multiplier count was a bit low but such were the conditions here, a bit of static and a few crashes. Lots of contacts but no long distance IA, TN, GA and ME was the reach. Looking forward to next month. Thanks to all. Brion #3011

K6MGO - With S6 noise level only managed one 20m QSO. Once again never heard a signal on 80. Does anyone in CA ever go down to 80? Had fun and was relaxed this time. Thanks to all and CU next month. 73, Bill K6MGO

AK3X - Started 10 minutes late, and 20 minutes later a thunderstorm ended my effort. 20 was good while it lasted. DSW-20 at 3w. Had fun anyway, and we needed the rain. 72 to all, Peter

W2SH - Collecting overseas house guests from the airport deprived me of operating for all but the final few minutes.

NQ2W - Ten-Tec Jupiter @ 5W to a mini beam at 25' for 20 and inv V at 40' for 40. Started out on 20 and made 20 Q's. Went to 40 and made 7 more...time's up...where'd the two hours go? Mostly S&P...couldn't find too many places to call CQ. I echo Dean's comment about working stations once per band. Bands were in great shape...let's hope they stay that way! Lots of loud stations on both 20 and 40 this month. Thanks to all. I've uploaded my log to LoTW and eQSL...hope you'll consider doing the same. Until next time, 72/73 Will NQ2W

VE5BCS - The QSB is killing me.

WB0T - First sprint worked in several years, and enjoyed it!! 73, Jerry WB0T 2489

EA5GVZ - What a mess at starting! Receiving so many and close spaced stations. Worked with a FT-817ND with a fishing pole style vertical placed next to the sea. Sorry to all hearing my awful code.

WG8Y - Hi all. Started a few minutes late. 20 was pretty good here in NC. Jumped between 20 and 40 picking up a few on both. Stopped about a half hour from end of Sprint with a low battery but had fun picking up two newer members in a row before I stopped. W7WHY 6158 then K2YGH 6159. Neat. 72 from Salisbury, NC WG8Y

KG3W - 20 sounded good but after 15 minutes only had K4BAI in the log. 80 was S9 static, so pretty much stayed with 40. Band was full of QRN but lots of signals. Fun night. We had our 12 year old granddaughter visiting from GA. Lots of QSO interruptions, but she is a joy! Worked John K3WWP with 9 minutes to go. He was sandwiched between two other stations, but we got her done. Very happy to hear so many fine operators. Thanks all! 73 Scotty KG3W

N2CN - Great conditions on 40 and 20. Had to take a phone call, so I only worked the first 45 minutes.

N1RU - I started out on 20 on the back deck using my new portable set-up (an R4020 to an end fed dipole) -- a great way to spend part of a summer evening. Then I went inside to work 40 with my 857D at 5W to the attic loop. I always look forward to these sprints! 72, James (NE Indiana).
