Aug 2011 Straight Key/Bug Sprint (#82) Final Results K3WWP Comments - Our first sprint under 100 logs since March 2010. We wound up with 87 which is still very impressive compared to other club's 2 hour sprints. Even more so when you consider we run strictly QRP and in many cases very simple antenna setups. Also that we had to deal with the ST0R RTTY QRM on our most popular band - 40 meters - this month. However we are going to put in a little extra effort in promoting next month's sprint to see if we can get back on the 100+ logs track. I'm extremely proud of the many members who sensibly fought the ST0R QRM by simply sliding down the band to clear territory. Those who didn't follow suit will know how to handly any future similar situations now. We shouldn't have that problem again though barring another DXpedition and a coincidence of scheduling. Time now to appeal any changes in your score or not being listed as a GOLDEN LOG. You have until next Sunday at 2400Z. After that, no corrections will be made. Fortunately signals were strong on 40 meters and I was able to make 28 QSOs there plus 2 on 20 meters. However I'm afraid I probably missed answers to my CQs, and I apologize to those whom I missed. There were periods even with the noise when my rate was pretty good and it was fun, but several droughts also, especially the last half hour with only 3 QSOs. Ever since our sprints have been posted to the ARRL contest page the QRM/N has become a issue. Having it posted is great publicity. It also lets the LIDS know where they can play their games. Tonight was such a rough one that I cut my time short by 35 minutes. The RTTY was awful tonight. Not to mention the couple of LIDS who stalke the band and tuned up over a few qso's. I was almost relieved when the telephone rang in the middle of the Sprint. Maybe September will be better. 73 W9HLY - Lots of RTTY chasing DX but wasn't denied. Lets be honest, one was about lost but he stuck with me. I would mention his call but don't know which stn it was. Bit-O-fun1 KU8S - 40M was a bust here in central Florida, as there was a lot of Rtty/digital stuff from 7.039 to 7.055! So I went to 20M and that's where the action was tonight. Only worked a few, but had a great time. Still learning the ropes, tnx to the stations that were patient wwith me. I shall return! W7GAH - Seemed like more working the sprint than last month, only the noise was pretty bad on 40 and 20. Used the Elecraft KX-1 again. Having fun getting used to the rig. Enjoyed the sprint as always. VE3FUJ - I had to shut down as thunder and lightning rolled through here abt 45 minutes into the Contest. Just as well as the band was filled with RTTY with no space left for CW. I basically only heard the 4 contacts that I made. Nevertheless it was fun trying. Brion AI4SV - Most of the action was on 40. Listened and called on 20, but no contacts. On 80, I could hear K4ORD, but I couldn't get my call sign across to him. A few contacts were tenuous and were lost to qsb (sorry, K9OSC, you sounded strong on the initial call, but disappeared into this mist during your exchange). Thanks for Prince Edward Island, W1OH! KB1PBA - Worked 1/2 QSOs on 20m and 1/2 on 40m. Multipliers seemed scarcer than normal. KB3AAG - Another fine sprint! 40 was fine I just ran out of stations to agravate. Only found two on 80 and nothing on 15. Fellows I am sorry to ask for so many repeats but I only have one hand that works. A stroke took the other one and at times my 77 year old mind dosnt work well either! I do thank you all for putting up with me! Frank NV9X - Had fun. Glad I got a chance to do this one. Tnx to all. 73 Bert N8XMS - A cookout with the future inlaws of my daughter (only our 2nd time to meet) was impossible to leave early so I didn't get home until 0200z. From the sound of things I missed a great evening. I still managed to make 8 contacts in the last 25 minutes of the sprint. W9GFB - RTTY,RTTY everywhere!!! But still fun!!! N5NK - When 20m action slowed to a halt I moved to 40m. Only heard K4BAI and a bunch of PSK and RTTY where I expected to hear a lot of CQNA. Went back to 20m and worked those way down in the QRN. If it gets to be any more fun somebody's going to figure a way to charge for it. My thanks to the organizers; what a job! W2JEK - got on late again.tried 20 at the start but no luck and tried 40 but found rtty so went to 80 and made 3 then 20 for 1 then to 40 below the rtty for 5 qso. band a little noisy but good copy. had a good time. rig was ft-840 at 5w to wire ant. and signal electric r-48 key. 72 and 73 Don Younger W2JEK #1135 WB4MNK - Had a ball but wasted to much time on 80 hoping to make at least one contact. Good to hear a lot of strong QRP signals, and a nice challenge digging the weak ones out. If you worked me, thanks a lot. 73 es 72 Zeke K4KRW - I had multiple bands this time. I just finished building my new Sierra. I had a lot of fun on 20m and 40m. I tried on 80m but didn't hear much (except a lot of noise). John (K3WWP), I can't believe I asked you to repeat your number. Caught in the moment I guess (funny). I think that is first time I've had a contact with you. Thanks to you and everyone else for helping me break in my new rig. What fun! K4ORD - 20M stayed open the whole time, made 11qso's on 20M, 19 on 40M and 2 on 80M. Signals on 80 seemed weak, heard others I couldn't copy due to qrn. Seems the RTTY folks sent NAQCC ops down around 7030, which seemed to work ok. Nice to work CO8CML on 20M Thanks to all for the qso's, until next month 72/73 Riley NF8M - After missing the July sprint, I was able to operate the full two hours. Started out on the patio but after a half hour it got really buggy (and I was using a straight key! hi) so I moved inside. Lots of RTTY QRM on 40 but it yielded most of my QSOs. KD4UKW - I was able to operate during the second hour. I had a great time as always. 40 meters was in pretty decent shape. One strange thing: as I reviewed my log, I saw that 9 of the 10 member numbers were in ascending order from my earliest contact (K3WWP, #2) to my last contact (VE2ZAZ, #5576). K6CSL - Very trying event this time. Signals on 20M were all weak and waterry. I thought I was never going to successfully copy AB0BM's #. I moved to 40M at 01:30Z and found a different problem there. Absolutely wall to wall RTTY QRM. I would find a frequency to call on, or answer a call and no sooner than I stopped keying then the frequency was obliterated by FSK diddle diddle. I ended up after an hour with nothing on 40. I imagine as we close on the Autumnal Equinox 20 will become more difficult and there will be more crowding on 40. Very discouraging. Bert AE7CG - There was heavy QRN on 20M here in Arizona during the first 75 minutes of the sprint. Many thanks to Mark, KI0I in Missouri for his persistence. We tried twice (0111-0115Z and 0215-0223Z) to make the two-way exchange, and succeeded on the second try. Band conditions were as bad as that! Waiting for the "QRN showers" to subside, and patiently repeating the exchange information did the trick. 72, Loren K8JD - I got a late start becuse lightning hit one of my public safety customer's dispatch centers and I was out working. Had a good time on 40M in my first sprint in a long time with QRP. I slipped a few times and tried to send my name and SKCC number but got it straight finally ! Hope to participate in more NAQCC sprints now. KB8FE - Had a storm pass through during most of the sprint! 40m was not in the best condition here but I worked three stations on that band. I then went to 20m and there was far less static. Texas was really living up to the hype ... BIG signals from each of the four contacts from the Lone Star State! Wish conditions had been better but weather and other conditions are part of the challenge. And a challenge it was! WX4RM - Good Sprint as always, 20M good DX with Canada, PEI, and Cuba worked. Lots of noise with digital signals on 40M. Tried 80 and noise just too much to hear with my vertical. I had a good time again. K9KHJ - Most of the night was on 40m, but it was crowded and a little crazy at times. Heard my first CW cuss word when a few ops got into it (can't say for sure if was our bunch or not, but they sure had their spelling right). As always, Bob, K9OSC was blazing away -- setting up camp nicely and working them left and right in his private Minnesota-pedition. Nice to hear VE5BCS thundering in from SK on 20m. And, hats off to NF8M who set up in the middle of the RTTY-its and was sounding great. Finally, the Texas cowboys were loud in Wisconsin. W5IQS, WB5BKL, W5YDM, and N5NK were booming. W5IQS - Great Sprint, Good participation. 20 meters held up almost until the end. I was able to work K1IEE again. Seems like he always shows up in my sprint log....See ya next month.. Evan KE3HL - A lot less noisy than Sunday night's NQN net ... Lot's of RTTY activity on 40, I didn't think to go down to 7.030 as I started running into ragchews in that direction. Thanks to WB4MNK for valiantly trying to make a QSO, but we just couldn't pull it off ... though I could have really used the FL multiplier ... It's crazy how a 50 some dollar radio (SW40) has given me more pleasure lately than any other setups that I've used over the years! KA2KGP - Lots of QRN on 80m. all evening here in WNY, but 20m. & 40m. were useable. Rig: TenTec Argosy at 5w. into 5 band dipole up 25 ft. or 5 band gnd. mtd. vertical, straight key. 73 to all. Number was 278 ... :) Had a shoulder replacement on July 5th so still not steady on my bug. Rig here a Flex 1500 , 5 watts and antenna a ZeroFive 40 meter vertical , bug a Vibroplex 100th Anniversary Original. Thanks all !!!! W3NP - Started out on 20 and got TX,CA,WY then moved to 40 where the qrm was a bit rough, but worse than that was the hi power RTTY signals which forced most of the sprint activity into a small area between 7030 and 7035. Did I say I hate rtty contests? This was my first sprint where I was able to work most of the 2 hours. I heard some nice strong qrp signals. Rig was the Ten Tec Omni 7 at 5 watts into the CF zepp fed with 600 ohm open wire and a Johnson KW Matchbox and the key was my German WW2 Telefunken straight key. Had fun. 73, Dave CO8CML - Despite strong QRM, it was possible for me to get 6 QSO's on 20m.Thanks to all the stations who made it possible for me.Hope see all of you in the next sprint!! N8LA - Started out on 20. Spent several minutes there because heard many calling CQ NA, but they apparently didn't hear me when I called them or called CQ NA. Went to 80. Spent a few more minutes there but only heard some strong signals on nets, but none calling CQ NA and no one answered my CQ NA. Finally went to 40 and worked all 15 contacts there. Kinda like "duking it out" with QRO RTTY signals there with my QRP signal. Reminds me of a few things. I Believe I heard a quote once to the effect that, "A little man will whup a big man every time if he is in the right and keeps on acomin'." Situation also reminds me of the situation of Elijah on Mount Horeb in 1 Kings 19. A number of "QRO" phenomena occurred: a strong wind that rent the mountains and busted up the rocks, an earthquake, and a fire. But the Lord was not in any of these "QRO" phenomena. Then Elijah heard a "still small voice," that I think of as a "QRP" phenomenon, and he went to the cave entrance to hear the voice of God. KB9ILT - I started out on 20m and heard nothing, then went to 40m and heard nothing. Thought I had the date/time wrong, but a few minutes later I worked a PA station, then another, and another and another - 4 PAs in a row! Managed to work in some multipliers before switching back to 20m where I worked 3 TX stations in a row, then silence, so back to 40m for the balance of the sprint. After the slow start 40 seemed pretty good, but we were all squeezed into a tight space which caused some pileups on the few calling stations. Thanks to all - see you next month. W4DUK - Made one contact on 20, tried 80 (no luck), and otherwise stayed on 40. The RTTY event sure narrowed the window, but I still had a great time and added a few new stations to the log. 73 de Dave K2ZC - Another fun sprint. Qrn,Qrm and ST0R on RTTY. The challenging condx add to the fun.I was using my FlexRadio 1500 running 5W. With the panadaptor, I could see that 40m from 7.035 to abt 7.045 was a solid wall of rtty, so I tried 20m at the beginning. Didn't have any luck on 20, so went back to 40m and started calling cq around 7.034 and stayed there for around an hour. In the last half hour, I noticed the rtty was thinning out a bit around 7.040, so I went there and made 3 additional contacts. The panadaptor of the flex 1500 is a great aid in finding contacts and avoiding qrm. Switched to 40M to pick up a few more. To much QRN and nothing heard on 80M. 72, Steve KQ1P - Life has been too busy lately and my plan was to work just one contact in the sprint and go to bed. Well, 20M was open and then I moved to 40M with plenty of strong signals.....so the one QSO became six! Too much fun. I will be operating on 40M camping the rest of this week, hope to work some NAQCC members. 73 John VE5BCS - Thank for fine test. band was good no storms today. I hope all is well KD2MX - An interesting evening. Started on 20M which was in pretty good shape and longish to the southwest. That ran out within the first 30 minutes so I went to 40M. Worked a couple, then as sometimes happens during our sprint, I was called by somebody not realizing what was going on. Not wanting to be rude, I had a very interesting 20 minute QSO with a fellow operating /8 but remotely from Tokyo. The things you can do with a radio and computer. Afterwards I worked a few more on 40M but since it sounded like the RTTY RU was in progress, I fled to 80M. Finished up with a few more including a /VY2 to lend a bit of an exotic feel to the evening. Far from my best effort, but interesting and fun. Can't ask for more than that. K2GLS - I didn't expect much last night with the ST0R pileup on 40M and thunderstorms predicted. However, 20M was quiet and produced some new multipliers and 40M had a lot of activity in spite of the RTTYers just above 7.035. The August sprint was fun dodging the 40M QRM and working 20M multipliers. K2 at 5 watts, J38 key and dipoles for 20M and 40M. WB8LZG - K2 @ 5w Super sprint tonight! Lot's of activity. Started out on 20m es band souned gud but 5 Q's later it faded. 40m was a hopping! wid the rtty thing , it was wild es lots of QRM, but there were some "qrp holes" with lots of ops. Worked 6 new ops with numbers over 5000. Welcome to our sprints guys! Had a little "run" going es that was big fun. Took the time to say "hello" to KA3KYF who called me fer a regular QSO, es i didn't want to be impolite, so had a 12min QSO with Ralph in Titusville, Pa, es hope he joins our fine group. With the super conx on 40 i went to see if 80 was playing, es found W9CC there agn this month, only 1 more on 80,NF8M. 80 seemed open but 10mins of CQ NA got no more takers. Back to 40 to S&P. Ended the night with John, K4BAI, always a pleasure to hear, from GA. I finally got to play the full 2 hours es my score showed it. See u all next sprint! 73 Gregg KD0V - 20 meters died very quickly. 40 meters to the east coast was open for a while, but the noise level was S9. When the east coast dropped out so did the noise. In other words condition were not great at this location. There did not appear to be many stations in the sprint. There is always next time. KE5YUM - I heard lots of signals but only made four contacts. KB4QQJ and K4BAI had BIG SIGNALS into Oklahoma last night. I look forward to the next sprint as always. K4BAI - Thanks for all QSOs. 20M was quite good to NE, Midwest, TX, CA, OR, FL, Cuba, and VE1, VE3, and VY2. Almost had Cayman Islands at 0120Z on 20M, but ZF1DJ who called me wouldn't give me his power. Sounded like high power off the back of my beam. 40M was pretty good with no skip zone as I worked both K2UFT and KD4UKW in FL. No stations heard west of TX on 40M. Never got to 80, which hasn't seen much activity this summer. Hope to see you all next month. 73/72, John WB8ENE - Got on the air for about 15 minutes. Didn't want to risk lightning damage to the K3, but I wanted to participate in the sprint. When I started hearing more and more thunder, I figured it was time to shut it down and disconnect the antenna. Hopefully the weather next month will be better. See you all then. 73, Art WB2VEN - My best NAQCC Sprint to date, even though I had some interruptions. RTTY activity really put the squeeze on the 40m slot, so I spent more time than usual on 20m and it was worth it. Had some nice contacts out west, thanks to AC6YY and WT6P. Spent a little time listening on 80, but heard nada. Regret that I didn't use a straight key for the bonus, but I took the lazy way this time... :-) TNX for all who QSO'd me. Had a great time, as usual. W9CC - The QRN was terrible but there was no excuse for the RTTY boys landing on top of stations in QSO. Thanks for the effort guys! WT6P - Thank you everyone for your patience. I had a static level on 20 that sounded like sparkplugs! All was going well until the lightning knocked out the power about 01:45Z! Great time once again tu .. Mark WD4E - My first try at the sprint. Not used to genlog so had to struggle some. Hope I got it submitted right. WR1B - My first ever NAQCC Sprint. I got a late start and was interrupted several times but still had fun! W5YDM - 20m is always good here in my part of Texas, so I guess they are bouncing off this big heat dome that has been sitting over us all summer. There were so many signals that I lost my first three contacts to heavy QRM by LIDS who don't know their own call sign. When I send "K1EEE?" and your call is WB8xxx, I'm not talking to you. After reading some of the other soapbox comments, I'm wondering now if it wasn't deliberate. K9FO - 20 was up and down but got in some QSOs. Not a lot for full time. Rig: IC 703+ and my original J-38 key from 1953. Still just as good as any straight key. 72/73 Will KU4A - I assume the RTTY on 40m was ST0R stuff. Glad to see that our humble little group gathered from 7030-7035 and got 'er done. 87 degrees in the shack at contest time, so made 4 QSOs through the QRM then shut it off. N2ESE - Great sprint,glad to get AC6YY in CA.Fun to work KA2KGP with #555, my # is 5555. C U in Sept. 73-Gary KI0I - Yep sure was noisy-20m not so bad for static crashes but lots qsb here -on 40 the static crashes were s-9 and + at times-qso`s were a challenge so back to 20-then it went dead and realized I was calling cq and there was`nt anyone around! Yes Sir Loren (AE7CG) the ur # kept getting crashed out on me ,but we won in the end hihi! Hope to see everyone next time 72 Mark AA9L - I am turning in my one QSO to help with the log totals. I didn't have enough brains to tune below 7.035 to avoid the ST0R DXpedition QRM on 40 meters. I went to 20 meters and made several QSO\'s with my beam but will not include them. I have nothing against contests, dxpeditions, etc in fact I am a dxer myself and worked ST0R. It's all ham radio to me. NW2K - Tough going and several busted QSOs (sorry to WA4AN as we were very close to finishing). Thank you to CO8CML for calling (GenLog says CM and I copied CO) on 20M from DX. 80M was a pleasure on the ears compared to 40M, but only a few stations participating. Up here on Point Prim for a couple of weeks (last time at this cottage location as it's been sold :-( Used my K2 at 5 watts to the doublet on MFJ mast about 100 yards from salt water. Thanks, NAQCC. K2UFT - Definitely not a prize winning log, had trouble with logging program, one of these days I'll get the hang of it. Member numbers should be OK, RSTs probably not. I would suggest that the need to send an RST should be dropped and the member's name substituted - the RST is generally meaningless from what I have observed. (We'll continue to use RST as long as most all of the big contests use it since we are training our members to be better contesters and that's the current main MO still even though they are meaningless in most cases - K3WWP) K1IEE - Before the sprint I tuned on 40M and heard lots of QRN and QRM, RTTY was heavy. Went to 20m and band sounded much better so I stayed there. K4BAI got me started with his 599 signal. QRM was strong at times and it was hard to tell who was calling who. W5YDM and I tried hard to make it but QRM was to much for my HW-9 @ 4W with no filters. Had a good time, thanks to all. 73 Dick WB0QQT - Decided to stay on 20 meters as 40 meters seemed pretty noisy. W2SH - 20m was lightly populated and stations had deep QSB. Still, it yielded a few faraway multipliers. On 40m a couple of QSOs were made in the usual QRP briarpatch, but most of the action was sensibly occurring 10 kHz lower. Nothing heard on 80m. AK3X - A minimum effort, I literally spent 3 minutes in the sprint over the course of 2 hours. Just impossible to find the time. Had fun anyway. Small Wonder Labs DSW-40 and my speaker wire fed 40M inverted vee. K0HJC - I set aside the day for preparation, since something always comes up. Brother stopped by at 11:00. Doctor called for a 4:00 P.M. appointment out of town. We couldn't make it back in time, and did not have time to pack a radio. Checked in to a motel with internet access, thinking I could at least access "Websdr de W4AX" out of Atlanta and at least SWL a log. Brought up their computer in the lobby, got W4AX up, plugged in my earbuds and found they had killed the audio on the machine, and the feed was too slow to read the waterfall. So, we submit the attempt. Next time, guys! WD0K - Worked all on 20; Murphy moved in at 0200 and locked up my gen-log. When I got it back up and running it was 0236z. Skip was longer on 40 meters from VA in the last 15 to 20 minutes, too late to take advantage of it. Had fun again and that is what it is all about to me.
