Jun 2011 Straight Key/Bug Sprint (#80) Final Results Our final total of 122 logs puts this sprint in second place among all our 80 sprints behind only 135 logs last August, and gives us 15 sprints in a row now with more than 100 logs. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful dedication to our NAQCC and its sprints. We know our sprints require a little more work than other sprints where all is needed is to report the number of QSO's made. We of course require full detailed logs which are carefully cross-checked. That makes our log totals even more impressive. The cross-checking is finished now and the ball is back in your court. Check your score below and if it's not what you expected, let me know, and I'll explain why and/or re-correct if it was my mistake that changed it. Once again I got so wrapped up in just sitting and calling CQ that I probably missed a lot by not going S&Ping. I'm sure I could have improved my multipliers at least by doing so. But hey, I don't get to sit and hold a frequency calling CQ in many other contests, so I'll probably keep on doing it this way and settle for a little lower score. The fun is not in making top scores, but in working so many of our wonderful members. I think I earned a worked all NJ NAQCC Sprint Participants award on 80. 5 of my 6 80M QSO's were NJ stations. 20 was open most of the contest, but I just don't perform as well on that band so I couldn't really take advantage of the openings, and only made 5 QSO's on that band. K4NP - Breaking in the new Force 12 Flagpole antenna on Flag Day! Did good on 20m early on. Get a few on 40 in the middle. Nothing on 80. Quit at 0200. K2HT - Thanks for the stations that strained to hear my 4 watts and indoor antenna. QRN got heavy at 0145Z in Iowa. KD2MX - This was the most enjoyable sprint for me in ages. I had the full two hours with no interruptions. QRN was low. The bands were good, allowing me to work stations on 20, 40 and 80. Maybe I should have tried 15 to start out? There was a steady supply of stations to work. This might be my highest score, certainly close to it. Just plain old great fun tonight. I used my Ten Tec Argonaut at 4.75 watts with my open wire fed dipole and Viking KW Matchbox and a 1963 Vibroplex Blue Racer Deluxe bug. Good conditions early on 20M for a change here; stayed there the first hour and picked up some mults I might not have gotten on 40M. Gave my new Ten-Tec R4020 a good break-in and it performed like a champ. Very impressed with receiver. Of course, this rig is not mfg'd. by Ten-Tec, but they distribute it. Still, good quality little QRP rig. Not sorry for the investment. My apologies to all for my poor sending tonight. Between using a different key than my usual contest straight key and trying to send with a brace on my wrist because of carpal tunnel acting up, it's a miracle I could send my call legibly...HI! The band was kind of 'up and down'. 569 was the weakest signal I could copy well enough to work. I used my 40 meter sloping dipole with the upper end up 60 feet. This antenna does a decent job. See you in the next NAQCC Sprint !! K1YAN - Good conditions here in eastern MA after a few days of poor bands. QRPp at 550 mW did the job pretty well with few repeats requested. N6OSB - First sprint ever worked! XYL was out of town so gave it a shot. It was lots of fun! Hope to join you guys next time. I got my times (UTC-PST) mixed up and only got half an hour of fun. KC9MTP - Finally!!! I was able to get extra money and time to replace the finals on the FT-817. Woke up from a nap after work to see an email that the sprint was less then an hour away so I pulled out my PC to Rig keying cable, made sure it worked, updated the software, then waited. Was only going to to 3 or 5 contacts just to add to the log count, but I did the whole 2 hrs. Found my secret weapon buttons to be able to pick out the single whisper in the crowd of them. 300Hz filter, IPO, and ATT. Go figure?!?! Was the only thing able to knock ALL the noise down AND still get real strong sig's coming through the headset on 40's S8/9 noise levels. You 817 owners should try it sometime when it's real noisy and crowded. You might be as shocked as I was. Got to work K3WWP again, nice! Always a pleasure to work my very first CW contact. Also got to grab N0TA in CO. Cool, cause I've never been able to get into that State yet IIRC. And lastly, N8LA. I heard ya buddy, nice and loud too. Just happened to be right when GenLog decided to kill my F8 "keyboard" output to the rig and I couldn't see where I set my paddles to plug back in and answer your call back. I went to the club web site to check the date and times. I called CQ and made a contact with a non-member and then I heard John k3wwp so I knew the contest was on. I called CQ and was pretty busy right up till about 20 minutes before the end. I had some local noise and qrm but was able work around that. It was a lot of fun as always and was a good workout for my new Flex Radio 1500. Thanks to all for the contacts 73 Dave KD4UKW - I could only operate during the last 45 minutes. Had a great time as always! 20m was the only quiet band, so I stayed there the whole time. WF5W - Fun again but lots of Noisey on 40.. Its a good workout for the Camelback straight key, I like it. K6CSL - I started on 10M, found no one there. Same on 15M. Moved to 20M. Conditions were terrible with deep QSB. I lost several contacts that either I answered or that answered me, to have them drop into the noise. I finally worked W7GVE in AZ and AA7VW in OR(thanks guys). At 02:00 I moved to 40M. I returned a call to N6DIT(a local fellow, not far me in the Sierra foothills who immediately told me I was a "dupe") I hope someone hasn't been bootlegging my call. I finally worked KF6GC, who had a big signal, running 100W. He was not in the Sprint, but reduced his power after I told him I was QRP, 5W to complete the QSO. So I wenT ahead and put him in the log. The log entry revealed he is an NAQCC member, but not actually participating in the Sprint. Maybe he will be encouraged to join the Sprints again.I realized after Sprint that I had forgotten to use my straight key, so I missed out on doubling my score. 73's to all and all a good night. Bert WA2JSG - Nice sprint, as always. Icom IC-703 turned down to 5w, English Kent Straight Key. 12v Battery. Vertical antenna (my only antenna). WY7N - I'm eating a serving of humble pie. The 80M dipole came down just as the contest started. I used an inadequate knot. I knew it wasn't quite right when I tied it. I should have done it over, but I was in a hurry; the contest had started already. I figured it would hold well enough to get through the sprint. (I was wrong.) I switched to the backup antenna, a non-resonant loop. I must have just been warming up the coax because no one seemed to be able to hear me. I'll try again next week in the mW sprint. WB3T - This was an exciting Sprint for me even though I only made one contact. I spent most of the evening calling CQ NA in futility right on 7.040 where there was a distant carrier apparently drowning out my QRPp signal... finally I heated up the soldering iron and plunked a trimmer capacitor in series with the crystal and moved up 2 kHz where I finally found K4ORD. He pulled out my little 364 mW Tuna Tin signal out of the noise. I just finished the tiny rig and this was its first QSO. Riley was good enough to also continue after the Sprint was over. Later, I found that the distance/power ratio did not quite meet the criteria for the QRP ARCI Thousand Miles per Watt Award, but it was a cool first QSO for my Tuna Tin nonetheless. It made me the big winner tonight if you don't mind me saying so, at least it feels that way top me. THANKS AGAIN RILEY! 72 to all, maybe I'll be back in the running in area 3 next month... WX4RM - Thank you 20 meters for being open tonite!! Signals were pouring in from all directions, and if I heard them, I was also heard by them. I keep adding more radials to the ground mounted vertical every contest, finding out well worth the effort. 40 meters was tough here tonite, and 80 just gave up here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Had a hoot! W5YDM - Many signals on 20 and 40. Hard to leave one for the other. Missed many calls because several stations calling at once. K4KRW - Thanks! I just love these sprints. I had a great time with my OHR-100A on 40 meters. I think I had three QSOs where others really had to dig my signal out of the noise. Thanks for your patience. I hope to acquire an all band QRP rig kit in the near future. Can't wait to get out the soldering iron. 73 N4JD - One less than last time but nice to here the stations from west of te mississipp. NO2D - Started on 20 M. OK for a while, but faded. Switched to 40 M. Too noisy. Tried 80 M. Way too noisy. Back to 20 M and the loop. It is a bit quieter, although it is aimed, if there is such a thing, at the North Pole. Not too many NAQCC members there. But, I did pick up a few. KB4QQJ was the loudest signal here in Parker, CO. As always, thanks for an interesting and fun sprint. Pete N8LA - Missed Sprint in April. In May, stood next to W9CC at FDIM hotel when he worked K3WWP in Sprint. This month, worked W9CC next to K3WWP in Sprint. Go figure!! K9KHJ - Fun. Again. Torn between being able to hear both sides of the exchanges on 40m and getting ripped apart by QRN. 20m was good but everyone was clustered around 14.060 like bumblebees. Always happy to work Bob, K9OSC who built my K1. K4ORD - Most of the signals on 20M were weak here, but most were much stronger on 40M but the band was a bit noisy.Had S8 to S9 qrn. I had a good time for the short time I was on. 73, Steve - AA5TB #0057 WB4MNK - Bands were in good shape. Lot of activity on 20 meters almost to the end. Again a fun time for me. N6VOH - The sprint was fun. Have not been in one for a while. Glad to hear so many QRP signals. Rig is an IC-703@5watts and used a beam and dipole. Band conditions on the west coast were crappy. 72,73, Barry K3RLL - FT-817 to G5RVjr: Back in PA for the NAQCC NJ Sprint tonight and what a difference an OUTSIDE antenna makes! Besides, wasn't 40 meters nice without all the digi-QRM tonight? Only had an hour to play, but one of my best runs, thanks to all those who pulled me out of the crowded band. For QRP everyone sure seemed loud. :-) AA7CU - Worked the sprint from Arizona VE3MO - The sprint started out quite slowbut picked up after the first 20 minutes. 20m and 80m saw weak signals and quick fading. 40m was good with typical summer-time QRN. Equipment here was the sierra at 4 watts to a windom up 35 feed. Listen for VE3QDR - the Durham Region QRP Club on field day. We will probably be running 7A ON. 72. WB8LZG - Good sprint this month , 20m was open at the start ,but seemed to be vy iffy here in Michigan, lots of signals ,but had a hard time getting to some of the areas of USA that i usually have a "beeline" to. ( like Texas,es Florida) i usually work 5 or 6 of the lone star boys, but i couldn't snag any. 40 was a bit more reliable, es LOTS of stns. heard CQ NA's from 7.037 up to 7.050 . Plenty of stns to work but had to pull plug at 09:30. looking fwd to MW sprint next week. CUL 73 Gregg NQ2W - Conditions were up and down on both 20 and 40. Was hoping for more activity on 80 to see how my new vertical performs but only had 1 Q there...didn't spend a lot time on 80 because 40 was pretty busy. Pulled the plug when I could see the lightning out the shack window! Had a great time on 40 meters. Kudos to Dan, K9KHJ for a whopper of a signal and great CW skills. See you next month. KE5YUM - I made only three contacts, but guaging the band conditions on 40, I am thankful for those. I heard several from W3 and W2 but could not pull them in due to noise. Apologies to my first contact -- my key more or less rattled apart during the contact. Didn't hear much on 20m, so I stuck to 40m. Had a great time. Thanks everyone. 72 - Jack K4BAI - FT1000MP, 5W, Vibroplex Deluxe Hand Key. Left a tennis team practice early so I could be QRV for the whole two hours. Just set the home station back up today after a trip to Bonaire (PJ4) for CQ WPX CW. 20M was excellent with good signals from as close as VA and AR, a great signal from N6VOH in CA, and a surprise call from KL7CW, as well as VE1BA and two VE5s. 40M was quite noisy as there were thunderstorms in the general area. Apologies to AI3G whose number I was unable to copy on 40M due to QRM from another station who called with his call every time I asked AI3G for his number. I could have used that DE multiplier! 40M was also pretty short, although I couldn't hear K4JPN about 90 miles away. Did work NC, TN, and AL, neighboring states, as well as WA and NV. Signals and signal reports from the north seemed down. I need to get my zepp back up as it favors the north and the dipole I used last night favors the west. Was good to get back in the saddle after missing last month's sprint. 73 de Dave WB2VEN - Started off quick, but then had trouble being heard. Had several answers to my CQs on one freq, but then one station who answered me began calling CQ after our QSO. A first. Was surprised at the amount of stations I heard and lots on top of each other. Some very strong sigs from VE and 8 land. Hope to do better next time. Fun nonetheless. KQ1P - Operated for the first hour, Ijust got back from a conference in DC and was tired. However, these sprints are too much fun to miss so I made the effort to get on the air. Conditions were rather good but plenty of QRN here. Too rainy and cold to operate outside here, maybe next month I hope. 73, John K4JPN - Good to see 20M open for the sprint. Later 40M helped pick up a couple of SPC. 72, Steve VE2ZAZ - First participation. Super fun! Surprised of how many stations (24) I could work on 40m in a two-hour QRP sprint. Straight key was warm to the touch at the end of sprint :-) Have applied for membership and will return! KC9UHZ - This was my first sprint and I had a GREAT time. I found my code skills need improving, will work on that for next time. KA2KGP - I operated KA2KGP/3 from my brothers place in Austin, PA this sprint. Used a metal fence mounted all band vertical. I think I need an NVIS antenna to get my signal out of the "hollow" here. Heard lots of NA calls, but worked only a few on 40m. I'll work on a better antenna! KD0V - The highlights of this months Sprint here in Southern Minnesota were, low sun spot number, a very long lasting thunder storm, about 8 hours, with heavy rain and lightening, and a power outage starting at about 0145Z and last for 3 hours and 45 minutes. VE5CUL - I heard many signals come and go on 20 and 40 through the S8 noise here. Thanks to John,K4BAI for the one contact that was encouraging. I am looking at some filtering ideas for my FT817 and will report on how that works out. 72 - Brian KA2CAQ - I always have fun. CO8CML - There were many stations on the air, but I only complete 1 QSO...so I think: the more important thing is being in the sprint and submit the log.This way we keep CW and QRP alive...I hope see all in the next sprint and have better luck. N8XMS - This was a lot of fun! Pretty good conditions and lots of participation. I've operated in almost all of our sprints going back to November 2007, and this was my best score yet! KU4A - Big signals on 40. Gave out a lot of 579 and 589 reports. 12 QSOs was one short of tying my personal best. N2ESE - Got my number 5555 in time for my first NA contest.What a BLAST!I heard Merlin send first C Q on 20M and he must have had five calls at once I could not get him with all the QRM.I did not send any CQ's just went searching. I' am hooked now !! 73 Gary W2LJ - Nice to be able to participate - 1st time in a long time! Local neighborhood QRN behaved itself and band conditions were nice. Good to hear lots of NJ stations - will need help from N2ESE, KD2MX and W2JEK when K6JSS comes to NJ in August! WA8SAN - Had a great time trying out a new end fed antenna / tnx to all who answered my call / MIKE W4JVY - 80 mtrs for my location was dead 40 was ok lot of qsb qrm but still had fun. AA9L - Didn't do the full two hours but had a good time. Forty meters was amazing even with the QRN. AE7CG - Band conditions on 20M were not ideal. There were periodic QRN "showers." K1IEE - Got a slow start, 20 seemed to be less QRN for me but did work the same amount on 40. Weak signals on 80 and 20 and heavey qrm. Always fun 73 AA7VW - Again I had a fun time. Once again I made it into the hills where the bands were relatively quiet. Signals on both 20 and 40 were a little weak but the experience is worth the effort. I was really surprised to make contact with VE1BA, John. Great to hear old and new friends. W2SH - 20m conditions, as well as local NJ weather, were rather unstable and it was not an efficient use of available time to spend the sprint's first half there. But with fairly high atmospheric QRN I imagined the noise would only be worse on 40m. However, it turned out to be not so bad. N9KR - Real nice conditions on 40 for this one. Only had 20 minutes to operate but wanted to participate long enough to get 2 or 3 contacts for the log. See everyone again next month. AE5KM - Good conditions this sprint. Much easier to pull the signals out. W7GVE - It was fun to get back in this event---lotsa FISTS and SKCC members that I work in their sprints, so I felt right at home...I will do this again.. THANKS to all who worked me...ED NG7Z - 20M stayed strong until 0230Z but there were no more stations to work. 40M is still weak on the west coast and I didn't hear anyone cqing.
