The MT. WASHINGTON OBSERVATORY Challenge

Mt. Washington 01
Mt. Washington 02

PREMISE:

Located in New Hampshire, Mount Washington stands 6288 feet tall. On the rare clear day, it is foggy 300 days a year on average, you can see five states, Canada and the Atlantic ocean. Its summit is crossed by the Appalachian trail and can be accessed by foot, via the auto road or by the cog railway, a train with a large cog or gear, that mates with a third rail to provide traction. Although the slogan “Home to the World’s Worst Weather,” used by the facility is not really true, it is home to some very extreme and changeable conditions. A 231 mph wind gust was recorded in 1934, and a low temperature of -50°F has been documented.

The commanding view and extreme conditions make it an ideal spot for weather observations, but a challenging location to access and occupy. Teams of observers man the facility for a week at a time. In winter, a snowcat, a tracked and enclosed vehicle is needed to make the trip. The observatory, housed in the Sherman Adams summit building, is a non-profit, scientific and educational institution. Their record keeping began in 1932 and provides a valuable resource for climate data. Observations are provided to the National Weather Service for use in local and national forecasting models. Outreach programs, consisting of experiments, demonstrations and lectures, are run throughout the northeastern USA. There are also video conference programs with observatory staff for grade school and high school students. Research studies on climate and related issues are run together with universities, private and government agencies. For the weather buff, there are some opportunities to visit the facility, but they must be arranged ahead of time.

TIME FRAME:

The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z.

RULES:
Just make these words from calls of stations you work, subject to the General Challenge Rules.

WORLDS WORST WEATHER
SNOWCAT ACCESS
FIVE STATE VIEW
SHERMAN ADAMS SUMMIT BUILDING
NWS FORECAST MODELS

The 87 total letters contain these 19 different letters : A B C D E F G H I L M N O R S T U V W

You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.

See General Rule #5 for more details on what callsign letters can be used.

If you need some help with your alphabet challenge record keeping take a look at our Alphabet Tutorial page for everything from some great pencil & paper methods to fully computerized tools.
