Here is a challenge for you " boat anchor " boys. Remember the days when many radios had actual names instead of just model numbers? Often they conjured up images of greatness, claiming to be Super, Pro, or Master. One manufacturer adopted a native American motif with names like Seneca and Apache, while another used names that brought up images of adventure and conquest with names like Valiant and Invader. Credit where credit is due though, the folks at TenTec and some of the QRP kit guys still uphold this fine tradition. This challenge contains the names of some of those old radios. How many of them can you associate with a manufacturer and the type of gear they were? Some were really superstars and others not so well know. We will jog your memory next month in the newsletter in case you don't recognize them all.
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z
Just make ALL these words from calls of stations you work subject to the General Challenge Rules. (Any spaces in the phrases should be ignored. For example the challenge phrase "INVERTED V ANTENNA" should be treated as if it is the single word "INVERTEDVANTENNA.")
The 88 total letters contain these 23 different letters : A B D E F G H I K L M N O P R S T U V W X Y Z
You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.
Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.
See General Rule #5 for more details on what callsign letters can be used.
If you need some help with your alphabet challenge record keeping take a look at our Alphabet Tutorial page for everything from some great pencil & paper methods to fully computerized tools.
A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1, but not all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
A choice of an item made by master woodworker Gregg WB8LZG as shown on our prizes page here goes to someone selected via a random drawing from all who participate and submit a report for this month's challenge. A person can only win once, then they become ineligible for future drawings.
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:
WORD - K3WWP N2OD WA8REI N2OD
NEXT - NF8M W8REI N8XMS K9EYT
(Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.)
You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.
Send your results as text in the horizontal format shown above to:
E-mail: (You must type that address into your email program.)
Subject must read: (your call) NAQCC (month) Challenge
For example: K3WWP NAQCC February Challenge
All entries must be RECEIVED before the 10th of the following month at 2400Z.

W0ITT: Thanks for another fine challenge. My most difficult letter was "R". Thanks to WA2HMB, PV8ADI and N5ESE for help with multiple letters. PA0XAW: Season Greetings to all of you and have a Happy New Year! May the radio conditions be better the coming months! 73, Age VE3DQN: It's such a relief finally to have access to better antennas: an old TA-33Jr yagi @ 50ft plus 40/80/160M dipoles apex at 43ft. This antenna farm is at my daughter's house, a 5 min drive from my town antenna-challenged QTH. While listening one day for the final letters of the Challenge, I had a magical ham radio QRP hour. First I heard 4U1A (Vienna) and worked him simply because my daughter-in-law is from Austria. Next I heard the famous ON4UN (John, author of Low Band DXing), so bingo, I worked him. I tuned a bit further and heard and surprisingly worked FR5DZ (Reunion Is), a new entity for me. And then to top it off I heard ON6QRP and worked Bruno for a nice 2x QRP chat. A truly memorable hour at the radio! N9SE: Finally! A month with a completed challenge ..and with time to spare. Highlight of the month was calling I1YRL while trying to finish the last few R's and getting beat out by K3WWP. Indoor antennas John? Really? :-) 72, de Marty K1IEE: Another great challenge. 20M still holding in the 1200 UTC hour time frame. Hope every one has a Merry Christmas and HNY. I'll miss the EU challenges. Thanks to all 73 Dick K3WWP: After not quite making the complete November challenge, I was a bit more determined to complete this month's challenge. I thought I had it finished when I worked VE1RAC for the R on the 19th, but then found I made an error with the Gs. So back to the drawing board (key) to search for someone with a G in the call. On the 21st I found and worked with a bit of effort TG9ADM to finish for sure this time. The bands continue to go downhill, but QRP/CW still works. KA5PVB: It seems as though as the SFI numbers decline it gets a little harder to find needed letters for the challenge AND get someone to actually hear you to complete the QSO (so it counts)! Maybe our future is "more challenging challenges"! Happy Holidays one and all, see ya' in the January Challenge! WI5H: Another fun challenge. I was not able to be on the air much for December. I need 23 letters to complete the challenge, so this one is getting submitted with only 20% of the phrases complete. Thanks for all the nice QSOs in 2017. Happy New Year, CU AGN in 2018, Mike AK3X: As usual a lot of fun this month. Had a little more radio time so It was easier, except getting that last letter Y. Looking forward to the 2018 challenges. Happy New Year to all. 72, Peter KI4IO: Tough month with a late 12 December start! Thank God for those alphabet-rich hams that seem to make it into the log each month. CO8RRM and IT9SSI are a few that come to mind. The letter "r" was the last needed letter in the log. Spent two days hunting for it - thank you IP0TRC! KJ4R: PFR 3B to vertical. Whew! Took almost all month to get all the letters. Holidays, some travel with work, and poor band conditions on 30 and 40 a lot of evenings ( my only time to operate) made for a challenging month.........I guess that's why it's called a challenge?? I'm glad I was able to finish this one to complete a full year of challenges. A week ago, I still had 30 letters left, but everything came together this last week to pull it out. Lots of fun as usual and some really good QSO's this month with other QRP stations. Also got LA1MFA on 40M for #109 QRP DXCC. Still getting amazed at what 5 watts fed to a piece of aluminum can do! Happy new year to everyone! 73 WV8DH: Fun Challenge as usual and tough right up to the next to last day when I got the last R and S. Looking forward to the new year and new challenges. 72 all and Happy New Year!! W2JEK: A good challenge and a lot of fun. 72 and 73 Don WB4OMM: Not much time with the holidyas and family! But got two anyway.......will try for more in January. Happy New Year all!! KK0I: Bands weren't very cooperative the times I was on. Still a fun time. WA2FBN: Fun challenge. Took till almost the end of the month to get my last R and S. Bands seem to be going downhill though still able to get a few DX stations with my EFHW slope at 25 ft. 72 Ken
