The NAQCC November 2014 Challenge

All challenge info such as rules are now in the hands of Gary K1YAN. Email him with any questions in that regard at pix_email_k1yan (1K).

PREMISE:
Our annual traditional Thanksgiving challenge featuring items found on a Thanksgiving dinner table.

TIME FRAME:
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z

RULES:
Just make ALL these words from calls of stations you work:

TURKEY
MASHED POTATOES
SWEET POTATOES
PEAS
SQUASH
CRANBERRY RELISH
GRAVY
MINCE PIE
PUMPKIN PIE

The 81 total letters contain these 22 different letters: A B C D E G H I K L M N O P Q R S T U V W Y

You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.

See the Alphabet Tutorial page for an excellent way to track any and all of our alphabet type challenges.

AWARDS:
A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.

A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1, but not all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.

PRIZES:
A choice of an item made by master woodworker Gregg WB8LZG as shown on our prizes page here goes to someone selected via a random drawing from all who participate and submit a report for this month's challenge. A person can only win once, then they become ineligible for future drawings.

LOGS:
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:

WORD - K3WWP, N2OD, WA8REI, N2OD

Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.

You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.

Send your results to:

E-mail: pix_email_k7hap (1K)

You must type that address into your email program.

Subject must read: (your call) NAQCC (month) Challenge

For example: K3WWP NAQCC February Challenge

Postal mail:
Hap - K7HAP
8532 Canterbury Dr.
Annandale, VA 22003

All entries must be RECEIVED before the 10th of the following month at 2400Z.

Soapbox:
K3WWP: Kind of unusual the way this challenge progressed. A fast start with 37 letters from my first 8 QSOs, then the middle part dragged out till I got down to the last 8 letters. It took but 16 minutes to get them from LU7YS K2MMO and VE3USP. Usually when I'm below 10 letters needed, it takes a long time to get them. All told, it took 25 stations to get all the letters. I just love these alphabet challenges and am already looking forward to the next one. I still have to finish the European Chapter challenge this month also.

KD0V: Band conditions were great. I was able to use all three rigs, NorCal 40A, K2, and K3. That made the challenge fun. Worked many QRP stations. It seems that the KX3 is making QRP enjoyable for many hams. Looking forward to Decembers Challenge. 72, Merlin

PA0XAW: Pfffff ... was hard to find so many times the letter 'E'. The last one was in a nice QSO with DL3ECQ on 7.030 with his brand new X1M and my old HW-8. Nice challenge, 73, Age

G3JFS: After losing my antenna supports in high winds at the end of October I am now operating with a sloping end fed wire about 30 ft long thrown up into a tree. Not the most efficient antenna for qrp working but I managed to complete the challenge without too much difficulty. 73 Peter

K1IEE: Another great challenge. Completing it was an adventure for sure as band conditions changed so much. Thanks to all 73 Dick

N8ZYA: I found myself drooling as I added my contacts in this months challenge. This is my first and I needed to walk several miles to burn off the extra calories. Yum Yum

N9SE: Managed to stretch it out a little this month - last couple of months it was over too soon I really like the idea of the challenges. Activities like sprints and fox hunts are good, but the challenge gets people on the air and making casual contacts throughout the month, rather than just bursts of activity. 72 de Marty

N1JI: I had more time than usual to sit at the rig this month and was able to complete all the words in an alphabet challenge for the first time. These challenges have definitely motivated me to get on the air more often in recent months. 73

N8XMS: This one was really tough for me. Normally about 2/3 of the way through the month I do an inventory to see what letters I still need. Well, this month's inventory showed 33 letters including 8 Es and 6 Ss were still needed and I really didn't think that I had a chance to complete the challenge. But I started hunting and managed to pull it off. It's only fitting that I found my last 3 letters (U, E, E) on Thanksgiving evening while trying to digest a significant amount of the foods in our list! It was a lot of fun. 73

KF7ATL: Wow! These challenges are fun! Thanks for getting me motivated to make QRP contacts. Next time I will do better. Garth

AB9YC: Not as much time this month, and made the best I could, when I could. I started off trying to complete the challenge with a theme, which was only portable calls. I started off with some good progress, but then the portable targets dried up. I abandoned the theme and went with what I could get. But with the holidays and other demands on my time, it left me short. I missed out on some key letters (R and S) which undermined my efforts on the incomplete words.

WB9G/4: Short 1xU and 1xI to complete this challenge. There were some great calls out there among the special event stations and the hams traveling for this month's flurry of big contests. I'm looking forward to December's challenge. 72 de Chris

VE3FUJ: Of all 30+ Qso's not a single Call with "R's or Q's" That cost me 4 words. Now that winters is "almost" here I'm no longer so busy that I haven't got time for Radio. See you in December. I enjoyed it. Season Greetings to all. Brion

PA7PYR: A lot of E but I am happy to work dutch stations every week. Normaly I dont use them. Tnx all of them and looking for the December challenge. 73 Rien

K0FNR: Only my second word Challenge completion. I found SOTAwatch and DXSummit helpful. In the process of scrounging for letters I managed to add two DXCCs to my total which I may not have gotten if not for the Challenge. Fun !
