KI4TI: My QTH is Central Florida. All my calls for the April challenge are DX calls - because DX is what I like to do. My rig is an FT-817ND using either a half wave end fed vertical or a dipole. This month to date (3 PM local April 6th) I made 42 DX QSO's with nineteen of these QSO's over 5000 miles, one over 8000 miles and one over 9000 miles. I find its not power or a tower with a fancy antenna, it is having one's simple antenna adapted to propagation. The most difficult letter for me to get was that one last "T". I searched for two days before getting it yesterday. I began seriously using QRP on January 27th with two QSO's and to date I have 93 DX countries including Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. I find most DX stations will go out of their way to work QRP stations. On rare ones working a huge pileup (such as the Austral Islands and Samoa) I went to the high edge of the pileup and called one time. A quick two or three calls logged Greece, San Andres, New Zealand and a number of special event stations in Eastern and Southern Europe.
K3WWP: Finished up around 1730Z on April 4th. But then I wanted to make it an all DX challenge so a couple hours later I found UR5WCQ to replace the Ws I had gotten from W1AW/7. Not much of a 'challenge' this month with the great DX conditions. As has been mentioned by others in the past, there seems to be a better variety of letters in DX stations than in W/VE stations. Now I need to find the number 1 to finish off the European Chapter April challenge. Odd that would be the last character needed as it is pretty common in European station calls. I hope to see an increase in participation in these challenges. I hope I've shown that they are not all that hard to master. It almost takes more time to fill out a report than it does to work the stations needed. Still I love these alphabet challenges even with the little extra 'paperwork' involved more than any other kind of challenge.
K9OSC: This Challenge required 24 QSO's to complete. A lot of fun and again was really nice visiting with many old friends in the process. The alphabet challenges are really more fun and a decided improvement over the Block Party concept.
N8XMS: After my Block Party Challenge fiasco in March it was really nice to be back to an Alphabet Challenge again.
NQ2W: My first time trying a challenge. Lots of listening...lots of fun. Will
AB9YC: My first completed challenge in a few tries. I always seem to be lacking a letter or two. This time around I had more time to devote to scoring the needed letters. I still got hung up on the L's and O's, but managed to round them up to close out this challenge. I like the alphabet challenges - contacts are fairly easy, contacts with a needed letter or two is what makes it fun.
K1IEE: This type of challenge is always a joy to run. Next month will be an even greater challenge as I'll be K1IEE/KL7 in Alaska for both the May sprint and May challenge. Thanks to all 73 Dick
SM5MEK: This month harder than usual, in bed for 10 days in the beginning of month and also easter celebrations. Anyway I did it in time. Now portable season on here so maybee see some of you in /P mode. Thanks for a nice program.
ND9M: Thanks for another great challenge!
W2JEK: a GOOD CHALLENGE AND LOTS OF FUN. 72 AND 73 DON YOUNGER
F5MNK: First participation in the challenge. After having finished the European chapter april challenge, some more QSO allowed me to complete this one. Best 73. Lo
K1YAN: That last "T" came at 2301 on April 30 ... thanks Scott, N3JJT! Tough month for radio between helping godchild get a new house ready to move in, three OS crashes with Win 8 PC ( fixed by trip to Apple store ) and quite a few days of marginal bands. Time to set up the gear for a few home-brew station contacts.
K0FNR: Just needed another "L", great fun.
VE3FUJ: Fun to partake in American History, very enjoyable Challenge even though I only made 4 words. Brion 3011
W4DUK: My first Challenge. Looking forward to more in the coming months.
KF7WNS: Good challenge this month. I should have looked for some more "O's" this month.
W4RQ: My first time doing a challenge. The alphabet challenge running QRP is fun and deceivingly more difficult to complete than I thought. I liked it and will be back to do again! Rich
KD0V: Another interesting Challenge. It took me a while to get the last letter. I went an entire week looking of an L. Next months Challenge should be fun. Thanks Merlin
Paul Revere made his famous ride in April 1775 and started from Charlestown to carry the word to Lexington. William Dawes rode a separate route to insure that the message got through. The telegraph of the day consisted of lanterns hung in the steeple of the North Church to announce the British route. Check here for more facts and myths about the famous ride.
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z
Just make ALL these words from calls of stations you work:
OLD NORTH CHURCH
ONE IF BY LAND
TWO IF BY SEA
The 83 total letters contain these 22 different letters: A B C D E F G H I L M N O P R S T U V W X Y
You can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.
Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 of the letters in the words.
See the Alphabet Tutorial page for an excellent way to track any and all of our alphabet type challenges.
A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1, but not all the words and submitting their report before the deadline.
Some challenges involve a prize. Check the Prize page in the main section of the web site for more info.
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:
WORD - K3WWP, N2OD, WA8REI, N2OD
Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.
You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.
