Soapbox:
K3WWP: This was a little trickier than Tom and I thought it would be. I think the idea of giving bonus letters for rag chew type QSOs is a good one although it added a bit to the manipulation of QSOs and letters, and I'm going to talk it over with Tom about doing that for some other alphabet challenges also. We need to encourage more folks to rag chew as that puts still more CW on the bands than just short 599 TU type of QSOs. It's the same idea with our Friendship Club award where we encourage folks to actually learn more about those they work through rag chewing rather than just exchanging club numbers. This was an unusual alphabet challenge for me. Usually R is my Achilles heel and I struggle to get that letter till sometimes the last minute. This time R was one of the first letters completed. The last letters this time were I L M which are usually easy ones. My first 10 QSOs this month (year) WERE rag chews, as everyone seemed talkative to start off the new year so that helped get a bunch of the letters out of the way very early.

KC9SNC: It took 47 QSOs to complete this challenge. Although 34 of these exceeded fifteen minutes, I did not use any of the ragchew letters more than twice. While I enjoy these challenges, it's no fun doing the book keeping. I wrote a computer program a long time ago to do this for me. The program is based on the old rule of using a letter only twice. Don KC9SNC

K9OSC: Another really good Challenge. Many more top notch QSO's with different QRP stations.

K1IEE: Very different word challenge this time. The rag chew portion was a nice addition, spent most time on 15M, 40M and 80M bands. Thanks to all, 73 Dick K1IEE

WU1V: I did better than I thought I would, given that I devoted much of my on the January air time to SKCC sprints and K3Y service. I missed SPEED X by one 'P' and with an 'O' I could have had MWT CO and MCELROY. I am amazed that so many people were able to achieve a complete sweep. I enjoyed the Challenge and hope to do better in future such events. This was my first NAQCC Challenge, as I just joined a few weeks ago.

VE3FUJ: I was unable to collect any O's Not enough I's , R's and E's Hence only 2 names. I enjoyed the sprint nevertheless, I had 21 Qso's but a lot of the letters didn't help me because of the above mentioned letters. Brion # 3011

W2JEK: Only had two ragchews but got all the letters needed. Lots of fun.

PREMISE:
Last year we received suggestions for two challenges from Gary K1YAN just after we had finalized our 2012 schedule, and we promised Gary to use his suggestions in 2013. This is the first of his suggestions involving famous straight key names.

However there is an added twist this month just to change things up a bit. We are combining Gary's suggestion with a rag chew challenge as described below in the RULES:
TIME FRAME:
The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z

RULES:
Just make ALL the following words from the letters in the call signs of stations you work AND make 10 15 minute rag chews during the month. You get bonus letters from those call signs of stations with whom you make the rag chews as described below:

MCELROY
AMPLIDAN MARINE
SWEDISH PUMP
VAIL CORRESPONDENT
J H BUNNELL
SPEED X
JUNKER
SIGNAL ELECTRIC
MWT CO

The 23 different letters involved are: A B C D E G H I J K L M N O P R S T U V W X Y

For your 10 rag chew QSOs, you can use each letter in a call THREE times. For example you could use a rag chew QSO with K3WWP for 3 K's, 6 W's, and 3 P's.

ADDENDUM/CLARIFICATION - If you make more than 10 rag chews, you can use any 10 of them to get the three times letter value.

For all other QSOs including any extra rag chews, you can use each letter in a call TWICE. For example you could use K3WWP for 2 K's, 4 W's, and 2 P's.

Subsequent QSO's with the same station cannot be used for additional letters. For example, no matter how many times you work K3WWP, you can only use his call for 8 (or 12) of the letters in the words.

See the Alphabet Tutorial page for an excellent way to track any and all of our alphabet type challenges.

AWARDS:
A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all the words and rag chews and submitting their report before the deadline.

A Participation Point goes to everyone making at least 1 word and at least 1 rag chew but not all the words and rag chews, and submitting their report before the deadline.

PRIZES:
Some challenges involve a prize. Check the Prize page in the main section of the web site for more info.

LOGS:
For your report, list the words you made and the station used for each letter in the word. The number of stations listed must be the same as the number of letters in each word, even though you use the same station for more than one letter as in:

WORD - K3WWP, N2OD, WA8REI, N2OD

Note how N2OD is listed for both the O and D.

Also tell us how many rag chews you made.

You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private.
