Makes me want to learn chess. Only kidding; too old. KB1PBA - All portable operation with PFR-3A and 32' vertical linear loaded short dipole. Some TnQP, some mountain SOTA, some beach. Lotsa fun. K3WWP - Had trouble getting the final P's for the Pawns, but made it in the sprint tnx to KQ1P and KA2KGP. I also tried to finish the challenge using just my QRPp (930 mW) QSO's, but came up one station and 2 P's short. I've relisted my QSO's above with just the mW QSO's, so the aforementioned KQ1P and KA2KGP are no longer listed since they were 5w QSO's, but nevertheless thanks to them anyway. N8XMS - Not much of a chess set for me! My schedule has been really crazy this month and I have had very little operating time. I knew that I was in trouble heading into the final weekend of the month with absolutely no words yet completed! R, P, G, and U were my holdouts. My last shot at some operating time for the month was a few minutes on Sunday morning when I managed to work DK9PY and N4DR finally giving me 1 pawn, 2 rooks, and a bishop! I have a pretty good participation streak going and this one was a little bit too close for comfort! 73 W2JEK - used 27 calls of the 46 that i had worked. used my ft-840 at 5 watts and wire antennas. the letter p was a challenge with 10 needed. ka2kgp and k3wwp were the last one's needed. also worked s58q as my only letter q. he had many stations calling him but i finally got through.. it was a fun challenge. 72 and 73 don younger w2jek #1135 KQ1P - Two P's short on my pawns; spent the last four nights trying to find some with no luck. I tried to build the words with the fewest number of calls. K1IEE - Made contacts on 80, 40, 20 and 15 meters. Very busy month for me but still managed to make the challenge, all with the HW-9 and 4 watts into a G5RV. 73 Dick EA8BVP - Hello NAQCC, It's been a long time since my last challenge. Well, I didn't do any track of my partial results during September. I simply worked every station I could using 5W, as always, and at the end I used all the calls I contacted during the month to fill in all the words in the chess challenge. Well, I was lucky to have all the letters needed. PREMISE: As with astronomy back in the July challenge, a lot of hams like to play chess, so this alphabet challenge deals with chess pieces. TIME FRAME: The first day of the month 0000Z through the last day of the month 2400Z RULES: Make words from the following list of chess pieces. There's a twist in this challenge. Since there are 8 pawns in a chess set (or one side of a chess set actually), you can make the word PAWN up to 8 different times. The list states in parentheses how many times you can make the name of a piece according to how many there are in a chess set: PAWN (8) ROOK (2) KNIGHT (2) BISHOP (2) QUEEN (1) KING (1) You can use a letter in a call TWICE. For example, K3WWP's P could be used in PAWN and BISHOP. If a call has two or more of the same letters, only one may be used. For example, K3RRR could only be used for 2 K's and two R's (not 2 K's and 6 R's). All QSO's must be 2XCW and you must use QRP power. The station you work can be using any power. AWARDS: A certificate goes to the one making the most overall words including the allowed duplicate words. Ties to be broken by a drawing. NOTE: Since we are now emailing certificates, ALL who made all the words will get one. PRIZE: A chess set (not too elaborate) goes to the certificate winner. NOTE: This prize WILL be determined in a drawing among all certificate winners. Also a second prize of a ham radio Christmas ornament will be awarded to the winner of a drawing among all who participated in both the September Sprint AND Challenge. Details have been on the Prizes page of the web site for the past couple months, but we neglected to mention them here till now. PARTICIPATION AWARD AND WEB LISTING: To get a Participation Point and to be listed in the results you must make at least two words. LOGS: You may also include comments about the challenge. Please preface any comments you want posted with "SOAPBOX:" so we will know what you want posted and what is private. Send your results to: E-mail: You must type that address into your email program. Subject must read: (your call) NAQCC (month) Challenge For example: K3WWP NAQCC September Challenge Postal mail: John Shannon, K3WWP 478 E. High St. Kittanning, PA 16201 All entries must be RECEIVED before the 10th of the following month at 2400Z. |
