The new ham in the house, 12 year-old KO6BTY will be building a 10 meter Rockmite soon,
so she'll definitely be operating on that band, and maybe I'll get to also!

Hi all, Sorry, I'm not for any type of whatever we might call it on the WARC bands. I know it's tough sometimes on 20,40 & 80m fighting the QRM/QRN but we manage.
I'll listen to the conversation but my first reaction is leave 12,17 & 30 alone. It's nice to go to say 17 or 30m and not get jumped on by a CW test, POTA, Vota, OR?

The WARC bands are great fun. If you don't hear anyone try calling CQ. I've had some great qso's that way. Also don't miss out on 10 and 15 meters. It's the time to enjoy them.
Posted by Jerry VE6CPP September 6, 2023 at 1:11 pm. From: (CA)
I believe Contesting is Not Allowed on the WARC Bands.. but we are QRP and it is Not Contesting Either.. just Operating ! I think the WARC Bands are still the lesser choices of Most Op's.. what was the 'Ol Saying.. 'Use It or Lose It' ? Probably even more so with todays Spectrum Auctions !
Posted by John KK4ITX September 3, 2023 at 5:11 am. From: (US)
We do get stuck on the busiest bands but detouring to WARC would make for a quieter experience as those bands are not overly used.
Doing so might encourage some antenna building which is always fun.
GREAT IDEA !!

At home I use the Ciro Mazzoni Midi-Loop. This loop antenna is located inside the attic. I work only QRP and work all over Europe. When I'm outdoors, PAFF or SOTA, I mostly use 2 x 27 meter dipole. Or HyEndFed 40/20/10. Or HyEndFed 30m.

I keep a “Sagebrush Antenna” — at least 25ft of radiating wire with a similar length for a counterpoise in my radio kit. I sometimes just throw the radiating wire over the tops of sagebrush near my OP. The counterpoise goes on the ground. A cobrahead gets the wires into the rig.

I love my "maple tree vertical", 1/4-wave fan vertical for 80/40/20/15/10, with 32 radials from 16' to 55' long, depending on what's in the way. 80m element is helically wound around PVC electrical conduit, and doesn't seem to work quite as well as the straight wire elements. 40m element does double duty on 15m as 3rd harmonic. All homebrew, hung from about 33' up the maple tree! QRP CW is pretty much all I do.
Ernie, N2DGQ April 10, 2023 at 12:31 pm. From: (US)
I work mostly POTA and State QSO Parties when I am QRP. For POTA I use the QRP guys Tri-Band Vertical 20, 40 and 30 Meters. This antenna has worked wonders for me as I am constantly working DX stations while out on POTA. For the State QSO parties, I'm at home using my OCF dipole.
Paul K9PM April 8, 2023 at 3:43 pm. From: (US)
Whether at home or operating portable, I always use an EFHW, a 66-ft wire in the field and a 133-ft wire at home, connected to a 49:1 unun. That way the antenna is resonant on 80m (with the 133-ft wire), 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m. With no tuner required and a short coax (usually 10 ft), my losses are minimal and I can put more signal into the ionosphere.

Don't really have a Main Antenna -
Upright Vee - 102" Whips
20 meter HamStick NVIS Dipole

Looong Wire Telco Drop

Much of my QRP takes place at the beach or a park with limited space to lay out a long antenna so I try small loops, small verticals and short EFRW. Almost all of my QRP antennas are at least partially homebrew.
At home (HOA) I use an EFRW mostly.
Cliff, KU4GW, NAQCC#1491 April 7, 2023 at 6:58 pm. From: (US)
I use a end-fed wire configured as a vertical with 1 counterpoise wire cut a half wavelength long for the band I'm operating on. I run it through a LDG RBA- 4:1 200 watt rated balun for portable ops running a Hendricks PFR-3A 3-band (20, 30, & 40 meters) QRP 5 watts output transceiver.
Brian -K3ES April 7, 2023 at 12:05 pm. From: (US)
I use end fed antennas for field activations, either EFHW or EF random wire.
Dan, NM3A April 7, 2023 at 11:45 am. From: (US)
Most of my QRP QSOs are SOTA or POTA. I use an 84 or a 40 foot wire with a 17 foot counterpoise. My occasional QRPs at home use my R7 vertical.

The only rig I use for any/all activity (all QRP CW) is a Hermes Lite 2, "Rig-in-a-box" style, with a Raspberry Pi in the box, at base of 1/4-wave fan vertical for 80/40/20/15/10 (with 32 radials). It is remote controlled from a laptop over WiFi, using the Quisk software transceiver running on both laptop (my end) as well as Raspberry Pi (radio end). I haven't gone portable (yet), except for this year's Winter Field Day; I used a homebrew portable "Mop Handle" vertical with portable 16-radial ground plane.

1- FT-817, first version, during 8 years, then, second version FT-817ND for 12 years, and now, third version the FT-818ND.-
And I use the Icom IC-703 + Second version since 2008. 15 years now.
Those two are ideal for QRP & QRPp (milliwatt)
Posted by Steve KC5F March 8, 2023 at 3:42 am. From: (US)
At home for NAQCC I use an IC-7610 turned down below 5w, to an 80m EFHW. I do lots of POTA activations with my Xiegu G90 and a 40m EFHW or WRC, but usually at QRO of 20w! For both I use the J-38 I've been using for 57 years.
Posted by Dave WD8KRV March 7, 2023 at 3:58 am. From: (US)
For multiple bands, my Flex-1500 has been a stalwart rig for many years. However, I have the most fun with my Ten Tec 1340 (which I built) and a venerable J-43 straight key.
Posted by Brian - K3ES March 7, 2023 at 2:07 am. From: (US)
Most of my QRP activity is POTA, both hunting and activating. I have and use: KX2, TX-500, TR-35, and TR-45L. CW is my mode of choice, and I am still working to improve my skills.
Posted by Harry KM3D March 6, 2023 at 11:38 pm. From: (US)
I get a real hoot out of the MW Sprints using an Electrokit SP1; called the Spider (VXO) on 80 meters.
Also I have a very early NN1G xcvr (AKA K1SWL) from 1996 that has a VFO and 900 MW on 20 meters.
... and an Elecraft K-1 for serious portable QRP events.
Antennas always wire; sometimes duct tape.

My FT-817ND keeps me in the qrp zone but I've only signed in a few times. I'm trying Ham Radio Solutions and their VBand to get in real-life code practice.

By real life I mean working one or two other hams who sign in to the website and work with whoever is there. It's a good way to avoid "Fear of the Key." The website has a solo practice area also and a QSObot which will interact with you, but I haven't tried that yet. We'll see how this goes ! 72

I use a KX2 and a KX3 as well as a Xiegu X6100 in the car. I guess they are mostly QRP, but I keep them at 5 W or less.

Ten-Tec Argonaut 5
QRP Labs QCX
LNR Mountain Topper
Elecraft K1

Rig used is dependent on when and where I am. In FL I often use a turned down rig but away from home QTH a kit or FT-818 is the rig. Pretty much always use a piece of wire of one type or another.
